    Uncharted Territory

‘Yeah… for you it comes natural.’

‘Not any different than for you.’ I say and her eyes wander off through the window, the park, beyond probably if she could, anywhere but here perhaps. The seesaw continues to challenge the pivot point, it’s just hard with one person left on it.

’Did you meet the new neighbor?’ She asks looking up at the clouds.

‘I ran into him on my way out earlier. Luckily I was in hurry so I didn’t have to force myself to chat. He seems quite the social guy.’  We were having breakfast in my apartment one morning this week when we heard commotion in the apartment next door, at Renee’s apartment. Given the stressed house market it was miracle it lasted already this long before someone else moved in. Teary eyed she pushed her plate with a half-eaten croissant away and I wrapped my arms around her. We stayed like that for a while before we decided to spend the rest of the day outside. ‘Are you ok?’

‘I’m ok… it’s ok, I’m fine with it.’ She pauses. ’Renee would be all over the place if a series like this would be filmed practically in her backyard, you know how many books she had about WW2. She would be bragging about you to all our neighbors.’

‘And what about you? Would you be ok with me working in the movie business again?’ I ask fidgeting with the wristband of my watch.

‘I know what you’re asking and only the fact that you’re asking makes me want to ask you if I have something to worry about. But I won’t.’ Her stubborn chin raises up. ‘I would love to see you doing something that fulfils you again. Your writing is obviously not giving you that at the moment.’

‘No it doesn’t. I would love to go back to it though.’ I sigh. In the past, whenever I got stuck with my script I would turn to her and we would talk it through endlessly. Nights we spent talking about the storyline and the feeling I was searching for at that particular moment until she provided me all the inspiration needed to get it right. I cherish all these times. ‘They said they are open to add a clause to my contract saying I can resign at any time without penalties, you know if you… if we decide to move back to LA after all.’

    1. Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.

      My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”

    2. Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.

They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.

In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….

      Thanks for the chapter…
