    Uncharted Territory

    LA –   11 months ago

‘Where’s your suitcase?’ Tina’s voice comes from far away. Ever since I got home she is driving me crazy with walking from one room to the other, collecting things to take with us to Paris, opening and closing drawers and closets. Disturbing me in my work. I have to tell her at some point…

’I don’t know.’ I wonder why this balance sheet shows minus. I mean the last show was sold out even before the opening. The accountant will know, he probably made a mistake, maybe I should fire him.

‘Baby, look at me.’ Her voice interrupts my calculations once again and annoyed I look up, hoping she will let me work after that. ‘Do you think Renee will like this? I found it at that jewelry on Rodeo Drive, you know where you bought me that bracelet.’

‘It’s fine. I’m sure she will like it.’ I push away her hand that makes the necklace dangle in front of my laptop screen. I need to tell her and I need to call the accountant. Maybe I should call him first. No. No more postponing.

‘Can you help me search for your suitcase, so I can pack it for you.’ She leans over the table, blocking my view on the screen one more time, to reach for whatever is on the table. ‘God babe imagine being back in Paris and the look on Renee’s face when she sees us.’

     ‘I can’t go.’

     ‘Sorry?’

‘I can’t go.’ There. The words are out. Her sad eyes are killing me instantly. This is exactly what I was dreading. I hate hurting her and all I seem to do lately is exactly that.

‘Why?’ She asks closing my laptop, just in time I manage to pull my fingers back before they would get stuck in between. And just in time I swallow back an annoyed sigh.

‘It’s chaos at the gallery. I can’t possibly leave now.’

‘Which kind of chaos now Bette? The gallery is doing great. The results are outstanding. Nothing will collapse within a week.’ She traces my jawline with her finger, while her eyes are begging me. ‘And you can always work a bit in our hotel room…. That is if you still have strength after I have my way with you.’ It’s not that her sultry words miss to have an effect on me, they always have their way with me, every time like the first time, but I have to stay focused on the goal.

    1. If these memories are a true representation of what happened, then they should never have married…. this was not their life in Paris but becomes their life in Los Angeles….. no communication…. Bette has no idea what she is doing in buisness if she wants to fire the accountant. That is like shooting the messenger…. it does nothing to correct the underlying causes of the problem…. Is Tina listening to Bette or is she just planning nice weekends and trip away from Los Angeles?

This is a case of that which you fear the most ultimately becomes a self-fulling prophecy….

      Thanks for the chapter….

    2. Good chapter, my heart breaks for them, Renee dying soon, their friend who means so much for them.

How is it possible they ended up like this? Bette a workaholic and avoid to talk. Was it a issue that Tina earned more with her job before they moved to LA? Was Bette trying to prove she was able to provide for Tina and a baby?

I am so curious how they got in this situation where Tina in the end cheated. What ever the reason, cheating is a no go for me.

But there seems to be a little progress.

Look forward to the next chapter.
