    Bette dialled her cell phone as she approached her car. She sat in the driver’s seat and awaited an answer.

     

    "How did it go?" Helena answered the phone with the only question that she wanted the answer to.

     

    "I’m currently contemplating a very generous offer," Bette replied with a smile. "It took everything for me not to accept right there, but I didn’t want to seem too eager. I told them I’d call first thing Monday morning."

     

    "I’m so happy to hear that," Helena said. She was genuinely pleased as well as somewhat relieved that Bette was offered the position. "Are you on your way home?"

     

    "I will be. I’m still sitting in the parking lot."

     

    "You called me first?" Helena asked, somewhat shocked that she displaced other more likely candidates in receiving the happy news so early.

     

    Bette hadn’t really considered what phoning Helena first implied, and now she had just admitted that she was indeed at the top of her list.

     

    "Well, strictly to prove my point of earlier this morning," she explained quickly. "I am quite capable of securing appropriate employment on my own. No assistance required."

     

    Helena smiled at Bette’s explanation and knew that in fact Bette was the type of person who wanted to share exciting news with someone she cared about.

     

    "Of course, and in hindsight, I realized the error of my offer," Helena replied. "Is there any way you’d be able to fit me in for a short celebration?"

     

    "What do you have in mind?"

     

    "How about I meet you at the restaurant of your choice, and I’ll buy you a late lunch before you go home? Consider it a formal apology for my earlier blunder."

     

    "Since you put it that way," Bette said. "How can I refuse? But I promised Tina I’d be there by five o’clock."

     

    They decided on a mutually agreeable destination and disconnected the call.

     

    Bette was already seated at a table by the time Helena arrived. They picked an extremely out of the way locale – one where they would have little chance of being seen out together.

     

    "I thought you would have requested a more discreet location within the restaurant," Helena commented as she took a chair across from Bette. "I saw where you were sitting as soon as I walked in."

    9. I stayed home sick from work today, and it was great to see one of my favorite stories posted. It is going to be quite interesting what Tina and the gang will think when they find out about these two.

    10. I’ve read this story from beginning to end so many times, and it’s the first (and quite nearly the only) story I look for when I log on to this site. I love that Helena, in many respects, just wants to please Bette, just wants her to be happy. I especially like that Bette is finally allowing herself to get into this with Helena. I can see, that if this played out on the show, she would show a lot more resistance to public affection, even be downright hostile towards Helena in public, and then try to redeem herself to Helena in private. But your story shows the other side of this possible liaison, that they could co-exist quite formidably, but still want to keep it low-key. This relationship, along with a Helacious relationship, are pretty much the only couplings I’m cheering for, at this point. Here’s to crossing ones fingers in the pursuit of the unbelievable.

    12. JKS, The story is setting new standards in awe and wonder. It has captured the potential zeal and essence of the uniting of Bette and Helena. These are two equally matched opponents that duck and parry on the battlefield of relationships. Each has an arsenal of weapons and experience to the game. Each knows the measure of their adversary; knows their strengths and weaknesses, knows when to strike and when to relinquish control so that the battle may be lost but the war will be won. Your dialogue dazzles and overwhelms with its wit and charm. The continual testing of each other is magnificently drawn out. A game of cat and mouse is evident with every question and response.     38. What a feat, Swim! And so funny!…This story is infecting so many with “Tina Amnesia.” Tina who?…Indeed! Listening to the dialog back and forth across that table in the restaurant was like watching a long volley in a tennis match…extremely pleasurable and suspenseful. I wasn’t sure if they were going to opt for a room or not. Oh, and speaking of match, Helebette is one made in heaven. Hee! This dreamy, blissful chapter has left me absolutely euphoric. Is the score tied at Love?
