Tina looks over at Bette and gently nudges her. “So, tonight was a little intense. Michelle didn’t look happy when she came to the patio to get Mickey….”
Bette glances at Tina and then looks back at her wine. “Yeah….”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to pry. We don’t have to—”
“Hm? Oh no, it’s not that I’m just uh…. I’ve been wracking my brain for about a week about something, and I really don’t know the answer….”
“Care to share?” Tina quietly asks.
Bette sighs and shrugs. “What does it mean when both of my marriages ended in infidelity?” She asks and then looks at Tina. “I mean, the common denominator is me, right? So, what does that mean?”
Tina takes a beat to respond. “Bette, these are two different circumstances…. of course, I don’t know the ins and outs of your marriage to Michelle, but what I know is that you weren’t the unfaithful one, so that’s not on you…. but as far as our marriage, we were both hurting and reeling from the loss of our baby…. Thinking back, I think we were both trying to figure out how to get through that…. I sort of went into a shell….”
Bette chuckles sadly. “And I became an asshole that cheated on my grieving wife….” She then turns and looks at Tina with tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry, T…” she whispers.
“I know you are…. like you said, we both have things to answer for…”
Bette gently nods as she looks back down at her wine. “Yeah…” She then takes another sip of her wine. “I wouldn’t blame you one bit if you sang that Cry Me a River song right now after the way I behaved back then…”
“First of all, I’m surprised you even know that song….”
“Of course…. it’s like a One Direction song or something, right?”
Tina leans in and playfully narrows her eyes. “Not even close….” She then shakes her head, keeping her eyes on Bette, whose head is still slumped in shame. “Bette, look at me…” she quietly requests.
Bette slowly turns and looks at Tina.
“Your hurt is valid, and you don’t have to hide it or feel as though you don’t deserve to feel it just because of the way our marriage ended….”
Bette takes a deep emotional breath and then nods. “I’m just ready to have this shit over with….”
Tina gives Bette a sympathetic smile.
They sit in comfortable silence for a beat before Tina turns and smiles at Bette. “Here’s a subject that always cheers you up…. white Lexus….”
Bette scoffs and rolls her eyes. “I got stuck behind that son of a bitch yesterday….”
Tina laughs. “Well, I ran into him the other day, and he told me that he and his wife have recently divorced….”
Bette chuckles into her wine glass. “Must be something in the water….”
“Yeah, they’re divorcing because he’s recently discovered that he’s gay….”
Bette turns and lifts her brows. “Really?”
“Yep, or to put it in his words…. He’s ‘too addicted to the penis….’ That’s a direct quote….”
“Wow….” Bette then shrugs. “Well, that explains the enthusiasm for pride every year…”
Tina laughs. “Yeah, I would love to have a conversation with the new owners of our old house to see if they were still over the top….”
Bette keeps her eyes on Tina for a beat and then looks back at her wine. “I uh…I still own the house….”
Tina turns and looks at Bette, trying to process what she just heard. “You…really?”
Bette looks at Tina and nods. “Yeah….”
Their eyes linger as they sit silently for a beat, and Tina tries to find the right words. Just as she opens her mouth to speak, she is halted by her cell phone buzzing away on the island. She gulps, looks down, and checks the phone. “Shit…I forgot I asked my assistant to call me…”
“It’s okay…I’ll get outt your hair….”
“Oh, you don’t have to…”
“It’s fine….” Bette says as she stands up. “Take your call…I’ll see my way out…”
Tina gently nods. “K…good night….”
Bette gently smiles. “Good night….”
Tina then watches Bette leave the room and drops her head as she thinks about Bette’s revelation. She then grabs her phone and brings it to her ear as she walks out of the kitchen….

Well, Michelle has had a dump truck of manure land on her today. No alimony and no vehicle. Hope the child support is adequate. Of course if they share custody equally, there will be none of that. A three and one half year marriage is now no more.
Bette rewards herself with a new wardrobe… Nothing lifts the spirits like new clothes.
I wonder why Bette hung on to their old house… hope we find out in the next chapter..

I like that Tina keeps teasing the “clueless Porter” whenever some woman is salivating for Bette-chops!!! And I like even more that Bette doesn’t get in a huff when Tina playfully accuses her of “multi-tasking”. HeHeHe!!!
Of course its refreshing when Bette is introspective. She’s realizing that yes, she IS the common denom in two failed marriages tho she by no means is the sole culprit.
I noticed Bette didn’t hesitate to share this revelation w/Tee . . . her trusted friend.
And Michelle . . . what will become of her??? I see her anger 2ward Bette growing into resentment and perhaps Chelly eventually trying to humiliate Bette.
Hmmmmm . . . maybe Tina has a movie up for an Oscar and Bette is Tina’s PlusOne for the event . . . And Michelle happens to attend with “what’s-her-face”???
Damn Michelle surely pooped and stepped in it. She let her insecurities ruin her commonsense and now she’s sitting in the outhouse. Damn $80,000 car can be traded it for something more reasonable and have money left over for living. Bette is give her chid support for Mickey. She better spend it wisely. As Patti LaBelle says Bette has new clothes, new shoes and a new attitude. It appears that Tina Kennard will get the benefits of Michelles stupidity. Keep it coming! PPS
Michelle, do you really hold on to having a fancy car that much? That car also requires expensive maintenance. It’s not just the monthly fees (even if Bette decides to keep paying it) the car uses a lot of fuel, uses expensive service, etc. It would also be a change of ownership in your name, you would also pay the annual taxes to the Treasury… After the car, what else will you want pretending to be in the name of your child, the house?
