What Time Can DoPart 5
[Bette arrives home in somewhat of a panic. This may be her last chance, everything had to be perfect.]
Bette: (Talking to herself)What am I going to wear? I dont want to look like Im trying, but I want Tina to know that Im serious.
[The room has no expression, no emotion, just the way Bette has felt. This room didnt have Tinas touch, her warmth, this was not their room. Bette hadnt been back in their room since that night, the night Tina left. Kit came over and gathered some of Bettes clothes and personal effects after Tina left. She offered to straighten up the room but Bette refused. She wanted everything just like Tina had left it, even if she couldnt be part of it. At the time, Bette didnt know that Kit took Bettes favorite picture out of their room. She placed it at the bottom of one of the dresser drawers so that at least a bit of Tina would be with her. Bette didnt find it until about a month ago, now it lies under her pillow.]
[Bette sits down on the edge of the bed and reaches under her pillow. She pulls out a black and white picture of her and Tina. In the picture, they are facing one another with the tips of their noses touching. Both had a playful grin on their face.]
Bette: (Talking to the picture as if it were giving her courage and strength)I always did love this picture. You look so peaceful and full of life. I will always live in my own ***** knowing I didnt guard your heart and I destroyed your trust. (Pausing as if to keep her composure)Tonights the night T. Always remember you are my one and only true love.
[Bette lightly touches her lips to her trembling fingers and then places them on the picture before very gently laying it back under her pillow.]
Bette: Thank you Kit.
[Bette sat on the edge of the bed a few more minutes before wiping her eyes and gathering her thoughts. She still needed to change clothes and grab some last minute items. She had to get moving, time was ticking. On one hand, time was moving too slowly, she desperately needed to see Tina. On the other hand, time was moving at record speed. Soon she would be face to face with their reality. Bette takes a deep breath and heads for the closet. She grabs a pair of grey slacks and a white camisole top. Casual yet comfortable, that was the look she was going for. With a few more things to do before she left, Bette stopped one last time and pulled out the picture.]
Bette: (Looking at the picture)I hope time proves to be my friend and not my enemy. Tonight I start my new life, either with you or without you. I just hope that whatever happens between us that you are happy. You deserve at least that much. Ill see you soon my love.
[Bette kisses the picture one last time before exiting the guest bedroom. With the picture in hand, Bette walks to their bedroom door and places the picture against it.]
Bette: Ill spend my entire existence proving my love for you if you just give me a chance.
[With that said, Bette grabs her purse and jacket and heads for the door.]
[Tina is beginning to wear a hole in the floor by pacing back and forth.]
Tina: (Talking to herself)What am I going to wear? I want everything to be perfect. I want Bette to know that I am serious but I dont want to look desperate.
[When Tina left the house that night she only had the clothes on her back. After day 2, Alice went to the house and retrieved some things for Tina. This became a weekly tradition for Alice, grabbing a few things here and there. She had a list from Tina each visit, however, the one thing Tina was specific on was that Alice was not to get ANYTHING personal involving her and Bette. She really didnt mind, it gave her a chance to check in on Bette. Alice being Alice, this lasted about three weeks. During the following weeks visit, Alice packed Tinas favorite picture of her and Bette. Our little detective had a game plan that involved her two friends. While Tina was out of the apartment, Alice placed the picture in Tinas room, somewhere Tina would eventually find it just not right away. Alice knew at some point she would need Bette and this way at least her presence would be there.]
[Tina walked over to the dresser and started rummaging through the drawer. She was looking for the T-shirt Bette always said was her favorite.]
Tina: I know its in here, Alice said she grabbed it. (Pause)What this?
[Tina slowly pulls out the T-shirt she was looking for but something was wrapped inside of it. As Tina discovers the picture Alice had hid, a single tear falls down her cheek.]
Tina: Thank you Alice. You always know what to do.
Tina: (She begins talking to the picture as if looking for answers)Oh Bette, I havent seen you in a long time. I almost forgot how beautiful you are. How beautiful we are.
[As Tina is talking she is outlining Bettes face with her finger.]
Tina: How did Alice know I would need this?
[The picture was in black and white; Tina was in Bettes arms. Both were facing the camera but just as the picture was taken, Bette turned and looked at Tina with loving eyes.]
Tina I hope someday you will look at me like that again. Im sorry Bette. I never meant for us to fall apart like this. Im willing to forgive you as long as I can have you to myself forever.
[With that said Tina gently kisses the picture and places it on the night stand next to her bed.]
Tina: After tonight, I pray I have more than a picture of you in my life.
[Tina finished getting ready, grabbed her purse and headed for the door. Before closing it, she stopped and turned back one last time to look at the picture.]
Tina: I do love you Bette, I always will. I just hope I can go through with this. I need you in my life, but I need the truth first.
[Tina closed the door and left the apartment.]
