Chapter 5

Present—2 weeks later

Bette’s POV

It’s crazy how life just takes you on this crazy rollercoaster ride.  I thought I had my life figured out.  I met and married the woman I thought was my forever and we had the most beautiful daughter ever.  That was supposed to be it for me.  Turns out it wasn’t…. And I’m thrilled.  I’m actually thrilled to be on this rollercoaster going through all the twists and turns and inversions and whatever else it comes with it not having a clue how it will end up.  But I was ready to find out

“Ok Momma.  You sprung for this fancy lunch.  Now I’m curious as to why?..Is it about the divorce?  I thought you and Mom were ok about it and if you are worried about me then don’t.  I love you both and only want you both to be happy and if that is not with each other then so be it” she says picking up her fork and stabbing her salad onto it

I can’t help but chuckle slightly at her.  She’s so much like Melissa in her physical appearance but she has picked up her bluntness and frankness from me I want to think.  Melissa was never either of those things.  Maybe if she had been we would have been divorced years ago.

I take a sip of my water before speaking hoping what I am about to tell her won’t upset her.  She’s just started here at UCONN  after earning a basketball scholarship to play here.  I’m so incredibly proud of her and that she choose to play where I did.  Tina was also a big influence in her game and like her became one of the top recruits in the nation.  She almost chose Stanford because well Tina was her idol but in the end she chose UCONN because it was closer to home. To Melissa and to me.  I hope what I’m about to tell her she will understand

“Maddie.  Your Mom and I are good.  We have an amicable relationship and now that the divorce is final we are getting on with our lives separately”

She nods “So if it’s not about that then why this.  You don’t do this unless it’s important so you got me really nervous right now” she says I can feel her anxiety in her voice
