When You Least Expect It – Chapter 6

"Bette um . ." Tina finally began as she placed Angie on her hip, "I just wanted to say I’m sorry. You know, for what I said earlier"

Bette smiled softly and shrugged a shoulder, "Its okay, don’t worry about it"

"No really . . I shouldn’t have said that. I don’t want you to think that I’m judging you or anything"

"Its fine Tina, I don’t think that at all" Bette thought for a moment before adding, "So how was your date?"

Tina eyes widened in disbelief that Bette was so stuck on that subject. She also hated the idea of Bette or anyone else thinking her meeting with Josh was a date. Regardless of where she stood with Bette, Tina didn’t want the brunette getting the wrong idea.

"It wasn’t a date. I told you already, we work together and even if we didn’t. I just . . I’m not interested in him"

Bette nodded, unable to stop from asking her next question, "So who are you interested in?"

"Hey guys" Alice cut into the conversation, hoping to put an end to what she assumed was tension between her two friends. "What’s goin’ on over here?"

"Nothing" Bette replied as she glared at Alice, upset at the interruption. "Tina and I were just talking"

Alice looked from Bette to Tina and back before raising her hands in surrender, "Alright, alright. I’m going"

Defeated, she walked back to her table and threw herself down into her chair.

"Told you not to go over there" Shane smirked as she played with Nathan.

Alice pursed her lips and grabbed her cup of iced tea, sipping the cool liquid from her straw until there was nothing left.

From the table, Shane glanced over at Bette and Tina as they seemed to be having trouble saying goodbye to one another. Neither woman knew whether to hug, kiss on the cheek or wave. Shane shook her head and smiled, mentally commenting on how cute her stubborn friends were.

After another embarrassing minute, Tina turned around and made her way out of the cafe as Bette sadly walked over to the table.

"God, it feels like we’re a divorced couple" Bette sighed as she slumped in her seat, "Dropping off the kids and then sharing that awkward goodbye"
