Where You Go There You Are

The knock was quiet but firm.  Bette didn’t need to look to know it was Tina.  In a way Bette only wondered why it has taken Tina so long to get here.  If it had been her, she would have been camped out at her front door long before now.  Standing up she makes her way to the front door.

Before she opens the door Bette takes a moment to straighten out her tank top, smoothing out the wrinkles with her hand.  When she felt she was as presentable as possible she opened the door.  There stood Tina just as Bette had known it would be.  Tina had her arm raised, clearly in the act of knocking again.  She seemed caught off guard at Bette’s presence once the door was opened.  She retreated a few steps back.

Bette took that moment to look Tina over.  She was just as beautiful as yesterday but in the first morning light Bette could see the chip on Tina’s shoulder.  It was in the way she stood tense and firm almost like she expected Bette to leap out and attack her physically.  Hoping to quiet Tina’s fears, Bette spoke first, “Good morning Tina.  I am so glad you’re here.”

If Tina heard Bette she didn’t acknowledge it.  Instead she took the offense, “Bette where’s Angelica?”

Bette didn’t want to agitate Tina any further so she answered straight away.  “Sleeping Tina.  She’s sleeping its still early.  Why don’t you come in I’ve made some tea.”  With that Bette backed away from the front door, inviting Tina into her home.

Bette waited but Tina had not moved so she turned her back on the front door and made her way back into the kitchen.  She retrieved a tea cup for Tina and fills it with tea before sitting back down at the table to wait Tina out.

Tina for all her self given pep talk felt her resolve to keep Bette at a distance dissolve just at the sight of her in a wife beater and yoga pants.  Now she was standing here alone on the front porch chastising her thoughts.  Instead of staying on topic, Angelica, all she could think about was how Bette still slept in a tank.  Tina finally realized Bette had left her on the porch.  Gathering up what courage she had left, Tina entered the house and followed the lights into the kitchen.
