Bette feels the importance of what Tina is trying to relate. It’s important to her too so she jumps in. “I did too. I believed in our love.”
Tina squinted at Bette as if she couldn’t see clearly what she was saying. “The way I remember our love it was true, clean and honest. We were going to grow old together in this kitchen, sit at this very kitchen table and discuss our children’s problems, their futures … our future.”
Fearing that the conversation would turn to Angelica and away from the two of them Bette offered more, she wants Tina to understand that it was her not Tina that made a mistake. “I never knew everything was falling through. Back then there was so much going on … it wasn’t apathy or indifference but more of a path of least resistance.” Bette can see that Tina isn’t following what she meant. “I was loosing me and it was effortless. I tried to connect with you a few times I really did but I just seemed to be out of sync with you.”
Tina’s tears wouldn’t stay within the boundaries of her eyes any longer but insisted on slowly rolling down her cheeks. The act felt like a personal betrayal and it ignited her anger again. “How could you throw away our love because it was easier!”
Now Bette was alarmed everything she said came out all wrong. She was trying to describe how she had lost herself but instead Tina felt that she didn’t want to put in the effort for them. Raising her voice, Bette almost screams, “No Tina I … it wasn’t about easier. There is nothing easy about the last 16 years.”
Not hearing Bette Tina went on. “I was supposed to be the love of your life.” Hear voice is loud enough to match Bette’s.
Bette quickly responded to this. “Tina you were the love of my life. No …. No Tina you ARE the love of my life.”
At this declaration both Tina and Bette were startled by a noise coming in from the entrance. “No … No that’s not right.” It was Angelica she was standing there for how long neither of them knew but it must have been long enough for her to hear their conversation. Because she barged in screaming at Tina.
“NO that’s not right. You can’t be the love of Bette’s life. It’s Candace not you Mother.”

I mean it is a bit unfortunate that Angelica heard the truth this way but it is the worst scenario that she thinks Candace is the love of Bettes life and screames it in Tinas face. What a nightmare!
