”You know, I almost didn’t go into Crisis Management with my father. My big dream in school? Was cleaning up the oceans.”
”LA’s swimming with big nasty fish, you should feel right at home.”
”I take your point.”
”You’re a Fixer, Claire, and a very good one. If I didn’t have ten important calls to make before eleven, I’d lock myself in an empty production trailer, and devour these dossiers like M&Ms.”
”I won’t spoil your fun, then. If pressure needs to be applied – the dirt’s in there.”
Engrossed in dirty secrets, I barely look up. ”I prefer the word: Innuendo.”
”Innuendo, leverage . . .persuasion, pressure, I believe you’ll get the promotion without them.”
”The first rule of winning? And I learned this from my father during his days in southern politics – never go into battle without great intel.”
”Smart man.” Claire stands up to leave. ”One last thing. Friday night.”
”What about it?” I ask.
”Don’t appear too overly happy, after poor Aaron’s dragged away.”
”I suppose you’re right. We’ll do something at home. You’ll come?”
”Let me plan a small party. Hors d’oeuvres, drinks, some place nice to toast you in as new chief.”
”But with low visibility, sounds perfect! Bette and I would love something like that.”
Soundstage – Shane
Nikki, the star of the movie, has been cruising me all morning, and I’m so not going there. I’ve got other girl trouble, a stalker I’ve picked up called, Molly.
I screw around on my phone for a while looking up what the real name Molly’s a nickname for. I’m stalling really. I need to call the morgue back in Dallas, and tell them what to do with my mother’s body. Yesterday, I didn’t know the answer, and I don’t know the answer today.
Do I cremate her and bring her back to sit in a box on the floor of my closet to feel uneasy about whenever I’m reaching in for my shoes? Or do I bury her in a graveyard by a church near where she grew up, out on the west Texas plains?
I’m barely thirty, and I’m fucked. For the little money I make, I’m overspent. What I need is a sugar mamma. Someone’s gold card to pay for my mom’s funeral, but that’s not what sugar mammas like to buy me.

Wow! Blackbird, what an exciting cliffhanger and direction to go with the story. Completely caught me off-guard. I wasn’t expecting Bette to be kidnapped. Does Aaron have a connection to this or is it the SheBar ladies trying to drag Kit down even further?
So many options…

Loved this chapter. Bette is very resourceful and hopefully she figures out a way to escape. Or Tina becomes a detective and saves her women.

What timing; Bette sleeps in the day she is kidnapped…I figured out it was Bette the moment a kidnapped lady appeared..Let’s see the only mob connection here has to do with Aaron; but I don’t think you are heading in that direction…you brought Penny into the story…mystery rich lady…always trouble there…so I am going with that…Penny has enemies…like the fact you are giving you’re readers a chance to participate in the story line…On another note; doesn’t Shane always have a stalker? Shane certainty does have magnetism with the ladies…Good to keep Joyce still in play. Kit has some serious problems with those bitches owning the SheBar…like that being kept in the chapter too…hope Kit finds some dirt on them…you are killing me here having to wait to see what is happening with Bette…your writing is awesome…Blackbird.

Great. I think there may be some possibilities:
a) Maybe related to Bette’s mother (though the gangsters were Italians and the kidnappers are Latinos, probably Mexicans)
b) Maybe related to the 20 millions that Bette got from donation, though the kidnappers indicate that “this is not a negotiation”
c) Maybe related to Tina’s sister (from Texas) looking for retaliation
d) Maybe related to the She Bar Dembo and Cindy that want to destroy Kit’s business
e) Maybe related to Shane’s mother and the drugs she is selling now to bury her mother, or with the deb Aaron (from Shaolin) has, although in both cases the kidnappers indicate that there is not negotiation.
Any way it looks like there is a retaliation of some kind (Tina’s sister, Jody, even Jenny), or maybe the kidnappers want to ask for money in exchange for Bette.
Wow this is thrilling, hope you give us the next chapter really soon, I don’t know if I could sleep thinking about it

Intriguing turn of events in the new chapter. I think you caught everyone off guard & successfully added that great level of suspense.
Many options arise for who these kidnappers are
* the mafia connection from Bette’s mother’s past
* Tina’s lacky low life sister out for revenge
* the movie connection with Aaron & trying to short circuit Tina’s plans
* the Miami She Bar bitches
* the new connection with the old flame from Bette’s after the $20M or more
So could be any if them or another angle I haven’t thought of yet.
Also thought that the gypsy visit was about the past betrayal by Bette & what she saw was Tina’s reaction to the affair with Candice.
But it could very well have been a foreshadowing of the current situation with Bette’s disappearance and Tina’s reaction to Bette’s not being there or presumed death since the police found her burnt out car.
Lots to angles to ponder & thanks so much for an eventful chapter. The next several chapters will test everyone’s resolve and devotion to one another.
We know that Bette will do EVERYTHING in her power to get back to her family. Although it would be a true mind bending trip if she had to pick between Tina & her mother. Lots of emotions & turmoil.
