A gaffer walks by and looks too sniffly for the dry weather we’ve been having. Cocaine? Now, that has a certain irony to it. Me selling drugs to pay for my drug addicted mother’s funeral.
The beginning of a plan. I keep thinking.
The Planet – Kit
Lunchtime in this place is always a mad house, no less chaos than a Friday night, but still lots of fussy people to feed, and no matter how many times I say it – Goat cheese stinks. I don’t know why you want that shit on your salads – eat some Feta, and get over it. I’m not putting that crap on the menu.
A striking East Indian woman walks over to me. ”Hello, Kit. I’m meeting Bette here for lunch. Have you seen her?”
”Not yet. Have we met?”
”Kit! You don’t remember me? Do you?”
”Wait a minute. Step back and let me get a better look.”
Penny steps a pace back, and patiently waits. ”You came up to hear me sing one time in Boston with her, didn’t you?”
”That’s me! We were just remembering those days when I saw her in Santa Barbara recently.”
”So, that was you!”
”Now, here in the flesh, where is she? I’ve been calling her phone.” Penny dials Bette’s number again, and it rings and rings. ”See no answer. Goes straight to voicemail.”
”Eating, I promise you, is something she hates to miss. Let me get a friend of hers on the line, see what’s going on.”
Somewhere the fuck –
The back of my head hurts, pounds really, and it feels like my skull’s been cracked open. I know I’ve been bleeding, maybe still am. I struggle with the ropes that have bound my hands behind me. No luck there. I twist my neck to look around the gloomy room where I’m somebody’s prisoner, and drops of blood splatter on the scarred wooden floor.
”Ackcht!” I try to spit out the bitter taste in my mouth. Drugged. That’s how they must’ve taken me, but why? I’m not someone you kidnap for money. Goddammit! I’m not someone you kidnap, period!
”Hey! Motherfucker! I know someone’s watching me! If you’ve got my daughter, if you’ve done anything to her I will fucking kill you!” I scream at the walls. ”I will fucking kill you! I will fucking kill you! I will fucking kill you!”

Wow! Blackbird, what an exciting cliffhanger and direction to go with the story. Completely caught me off-guard. I wasn’t expecting Bette to be kidnapped. Does Aaron have a connection to this or is it the SheBar ladies trying to drag Kit down even further?
So many options…

Loved this chapter. Bette is very resourceful and hopefully she figures out a way to escape. Or Tina becomes a detective and saves her women.

What timing; Bette sleeps in the day she is kidnapped…I figured out it was Bette the moment a kidnapped lady appeared..Let’s see the only mob connection here has to do with Aaron; but I don’t think you are heading in that direction…you brought Penny into the story…mystery rich lady…always trouble there…so I am going with that…Penny has enemies…like the fact you are giving you’re readers a chance to participate in the story line…On another note; doesn’t Shane always have a stalker? Shane certainty does have magnetism with the ladies…Good to keep Joyce still in play. Kit has some serious problems with those bitches owning the SheBar…like that being kept in the chapter too…hope Kit finds some dirt on them…you are killing me here having to wait to see what is happening with Bette…your writing is awesome…Blackbird.

Great. I think there may be some possibilities:
a) Maybe related to Bette’s mother (though the gangsters were Italians and the kidnappers are Latinos, probably Mexicans)
b) Maybe related to the 20 millions that Bette got from donation, though the kidnappers indicate that “this is not a negotiation”
c) Maybe related to Tina’s sister (from Texas) looking for retaliation
d) Maybe related to the She Bar Dembo and Cindy that want to destroy Kit’s business
e) Maybe related to Shane’s mother and the drugs she is selling now to bury her mother, or with the deb Aaron (from Shaolin) has, although in both cases the kidnappers indicate that there is not negotiation.
Any way it looks like there is a retaliation of some kind (Tina’s sister, Jody, even Jenny), or maybe the kidnappers want to ask for money in exchange for Bette.
Wow this is thrilling, hope you give us the next chapter really soon, I don’t know if I could sleep thinking about it

Intriguing turn of events in the new chapter. I think you caught everyone off guard & successfully added that great level of suspense.
Many options arise for who these kidnappers are
* the mafia connection from Bette’s mother’s past
* Tina’s lacky low life sister out for revenge
* the movie connection with Aaron & trying to short circuit Tina’s plans
* the Miami She Bar bitches
* the new connection with the old flame from Bette’s after the $20M or more
So could be any if them or another angle I haven’t thought of yet.
Also thought that the gypsy visit was about the past betrayal by Bette & what she saw was Tina’s reaction to the affair with Candice.
But it could very well have been a foreshadowing of the current situation with Bette’s disappearance and Tina’s reaction to Bette’s not being there or presumed death since the police found her burnt out car.
Lots to angles to ponder & thanks so much for an eventful chapter. The next several chapters will test everyone’s resolve and devotion to one another.
We know that Bette will do EVERYTHING in her power to get back to her family. Although it would be a true mind bending trip if she had to pick between Tina & her mother. Lots of emotions & turmoil.
