”She was getting Angelica at three, taking her back to CU with her, and then over to the park.”
”I’ll cover, if need be, Tina. I betcha she’s in the pool, and forgot all about lunch with her friend.”
But both of us know – that doesn’t sound right at all.
Joyce’s Office – Kit
”It’s an annoying habit of your family’s to come in here repeatedly trying to stump me.” Joyce wags her finger at me, before taking another perfect shot with her ping pong ball at the ovary fabric art on her wall.
”How’d you do that? Glue on them, or something?”
Joyce ignores me. ”Everyone of you confuses my powers with the police. I can’t lock up the SheBar’s owners up, and keep them from harassing you!”
”Trust me, this ain’t no police thing.”
”Okay, then, how’s it escalating? I’m listening. That I can do.”
”Saturday night my power kept getting cut off. Try live music with that kinda shit going on.”
”Right, we know it’s harassment. What else?”
”Same kind of stuff. All my garbage bins are jammed full of crap that ain’t mine, and ’course, they’re trying to run me outa business, and killing me with sumthin’ called – Internet Banner Ads.”
”So business was good, now it’s not. That’s gotta be tough, but do eyewitnesses tell you most of your business has gone down the street?”
”Joyce, you know I’ve got loyal customers! I’m not losing all them to a pinked-up new place like the SheBar, but it’s Wednesday and Friday and Saturday nights – that’s when they’re killing me! Hot Oil wrestling contests and gimmicks like – ’Drink for Free All Night! If your name is Heather.”
”Oh God! The rise of The Heathers! Seeded during years of drug addled wife-swapping orgies!” Joyce begins to laugh. ”Not an auspicious start, but nevertheless, the origins of the Beverly Hills blonde plague known as, The Heathers.”
I’m not sure what being fucked on coke twenty years ago has to do with my SheBar problems right now, but having neared the end of my rope, I pick up a paper sack from the floor next to my feet.
Dropping the crumpled brown bag on her desk, I give her my last bit of news. ”This’s all I’ve got. I did what you asked. Sent my dishwasher going through their trash for whatever he could find. It’s all in there.”

Wow! Blackbird, what an exciting cliffhanger and direction to go with the story. Completely caught me off-guard. I wasn’t expecting Bette to be kidnapped. Does Aaron have a connection to this or is it the SheBar ladies trying to drag Kit down even further?
So many options…

Loved this chapter. Bette is very resourceful and hopefully she figures out a way to escape. Or Tina becomes a detective and saves her women.

What timing; Bette sleeps in the day she is kidnapped…I figured out it was Bette the moment a kidnapped lady appeared..Let’s see the only mob connection here has to do with Aaron; but I don’t think you are heading in that direction…you brought Penny into the story…mystery rich lady…always trouble there…so I am going with that…Penny has enemies…like the fact you are giving you’re readers a chance to participate in the story line…On another note; doesn’t Shane always have a stalker? Shane certainty does have magnetism with the ladies…Good to keep Joyce still in play. Kit has some serious problems with those bitches owning the SheBar…like that being kept in the chapter too…hope Kit finds some dirt on them…you are killing me here having to wait to see what is happening with Bette…your writing is awesome…Blackbird.

Great. I think there may be some possibilities:
a) Maybe related to Bette’s mother (though the gangsters were Italians and the kidnappers are Latinos, probably Mexicans)
b) Maybe related to the 20 millions that Bette got from donation, though the kidnappers indicate that “this is not a negotiation”
c) Maybe related to Tina’s sister (from Texas) looking for retaliation
d) Maybe related to the She Bar Dembo and Cindy that want to destroy Kit’s business
e) Maybe related to Shane’s mother and the drugs she is selling now to bury her mother, or with the deb Aaron (from Shaolin) has, although in both cases the kidnappers indicate that there is not negotiation.
Any way it looks like there is a retaliation of some kind (Tina’s sister, Jody, even Jenny), or maybe the kidnappers want to ask for money in exchange for Bette.
Wow this is thrilling, hope you give us the next chapter really soon, I don’t know if I could sleep thinking about it

Intriguing turn of events in the new chapter. I think you caught everyone off guard & successfully added that great level of suspense.
Many options arise for who these kidnappers are
* the mafia connection from Bette’s mother’s past
* Tina’s lacky low life sister out for revenge
* the movie connection with Aaron & trying to short circuit Tina’s plans
* the Miami She Bar bitches
* the new connection with the old flame from Bette’s after the $20M or more
So could be any if them or another angle I haven’t thought of yet.
Also thought that the gypsy visit was about the past betrayal by Bette & what she saw was Tina’s reaction to the affair with Candice.
But it could very well have been a foreshadowing of the current situation with Bette’s disappearance and Tina’s reaction to Bette’s not being there or presumed death since the police found her burnt out car.
Lots to angles to ponder & thanks so much for an eventful chapter. The next several chapters will test everyone’s resolve and devotion to one another.
We know that Bette will do EVERYTHING in her power to get back to her family. Although it would be a true mind bending trip if she had to pick between Tina & her mother. Lots of emotions & turmoil.
