Chapter 4
Tina finally turned away, trying hard to ignore the uneasy weight in her chest, and made her way up the wooden steps of the house. She pushed open the door and stepped inside, the air immediately cooler, carrying the familiar scents of home, coffee lingering in the air, the faint earthy musk of the wooden beams and leather upholstery, the soft trace of the lavender oil she liked to use in the evenings.
Angelica stirred again against her back, letting out a small, needy whimper. It was the sound that always cut through everything else, grounding Tina in the simplest and most important truth, her baby needed her.
From the kitchen, the familiar rustling of fabric and the steady, unhurried movement of Augustine filled the space. Bette’s childhood nanny had come to live with them not long after Angelica was born, her presence a quiet force of stability in their home. She sat at the large wooden table, peeling mangoes with slow, practiced hands, her greying hair wrapped neatly in a deep blue headscarf.
Augustine barely looked up as Tina passed, but her voice, low and knowing, carried across the room. “My little Malaika is hungry,” she said, her voice thick with affection. “Like her mother used to be.”
Tina smiled despite herself, shifting Angelica in her arms as she untied the shúkà, supporting the baby’s warm little body as she brought her forward. Augustine had been with Bette since she was a child, and though her tone often carried a teasing sharpness, Tina had come to rely on her quiet wisdom, the way she always seemed to know things without being told.
Settling into the deep, worn armchair by the kitchen window, Tina adjusted her shirt and guided Angelica to her breast. The baby latched instinctively, her warm mouth working, the rhythmic pull sending a wave of release through Tina’s body. She exhaled slowly, stroking Angelica’s soft curls, pressing a light kiss to her forehead.
The door suddenly swung open, and Bette stepped in, her boots dusted from the dry earth outside, her khaki shirt slightly unbuttoned at the collar. There was an energy to her, the kind she always carried when she was about to leave, focused, determined, already half gone before she even said the words.

Bette seems to take on a clichéd heteronormal role in their relationship. Get the wife pregnant and then return to your “calling”, follow “higher causes” and leave the wife and child at home to manage the farm? What did she expect from Tina when she married her? Bette is admirably steadfast and passionate in her fight against poachers. But that boarders on highly egoistic now that she has a family of her own. Hopefully Tina finds the strength to talk to Bette.
Hope B will recognize that she’s being manipulated by Nyla. By admiring and following Nyla Bette could lose her humanity. I don’t like that woman. No respect for other people and their relationships. I think Nyla is jaded by all the violence she witnessed and could easyly cross a line. Hopefully Bette comes to her senses.
To make things worse: Bette was recognized by the bad guy and became an easy target. What if they come to retalliate and attack Tina and Augustine? Or Angelica?
Kins, you have me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next part.
That was intense. I pray that the poachers won’t attack the people at the orphanage even though I have a feeling that is whats gonna happen.
And I don’t know if Bette is that oblivious that Nyah is definitely going after her after those comments.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.
I just stumbled upon this amazing story a few days ago. What a gift! I love your writing. I litterally can not get enough of it. You weave such a compelling tale I feel like am right there with them….
I think Bette’s fascination with Nyah has to do with the fact that in a parallel universe she could have been just like her…. I just don’t see this version of Bette being unfaithful to Tina in any way shape or form. She’s just being her clueless dorky self at the moment lol…. And Tina needs to speak up for herself and stop being such a doormat…. Such GREAT use of history Kins…
I literally can’t wait for more…
PS: More baby Angelica please
Bette is being supremely naive. It’d be a shame if a lion ate Nyah.
Nyah is a snake! Lying in wake for her prey. Bette has gotten loss in the her passion not knowing that passion comes from her love of Tina and Angelica!nHopefully she will realize that before too late. Thank you for bringing this challenging story to the site. So good!
