Chapter 4
Tina glanced up, already knowing what was coming.
“I’m heading out,” Bette said, confirming it anyway. “Nyah’s just finishing the prep, but we need to get moving before the heat really sets in.”
Tina’s grip on Angelica tightened just slightly. “I thought you weren’t going today.”
Bette hesitated, just for a second, before shifting her weight. “Things changed. There’s been a report of fresh tracks near the northern boundary. We can’t wait.”
Tina inhaled slowly, nodding, but the words felt heavy in her throat. Of course, things changed. They always did when Nyah was involved, when work called Bette away.
Bette stepped forward, leaning down to brush a quick kiss against Angelica’s forehead and an equally furtive peck to Tina’s cheek. The baby let out a small sigh, oblivious to the tension hanging between her mothers.
Tina looked up at Bette then, searching for something, reassurance, maybe. A sign that this wasn’t becoming a pattern. That Bette wasn’t always choosing something else.
But Bette was already stepping back, already shifting into movement, into action. “I’ll be back by sundown.”
Tina forced a small nod, though she wasn’t sure she believed it although Bette had promised earlier that morning that she would make time for her, for them.
The door swung shut behind her, leaving the room feeling emptier than before.
Augustine clicked her tongue softly, as if she could hear Tina’s thoughts. “That one,” she said, gesturing vaguely toward the door with her knife, “Always running out. Always chasing something.” She didn’t say it with judgment, but with the weight of someone who had known Bette far longer than Tina had.
Tina hesitated, adjusting Angelica slightly, pretending she hadn’t been caught watching. “It’s just work,” she said, though even to her own ears, it sounded unconvincing.
Augustine set down the mango and wiped her hands slowly on her wrap before turning to face Tina fully. Her sharp eyes, weathered by time and experience, softened just slightly. “It is always ‘just work’ until it is something else.”
Tina swallowed, her fingers brushing over Angelica’s back. She wanted to dismiss it, to say Augustine was wrong, but the older woman had lived too long, seen too much. There was a knowing in her voice, the kind that only came from watching patterns repeat themselves.

Bette seems to take on a clichéd heteronormal role in their relationship. Get the wife pregnant and then return to your “calling”, follow “higher causes” and leave the wife and child at home to manage the farm? What did she expect from Tina when she married her? Bette is admirably steadfast and passionate in her fight against poachers. But that boarders on highly egoistic now that she has a family of her own. Hopefully Tina finds the strength to talk to Bette.
Hope B will recognize that she’s being manipulated by Nyla. By admiring and following Nyla Bette could lose her humanity. I don’t like that woman. No respect for other people and their relationships. I think Nyla is jaded by all the violence she witnessed and could easyly cross a line. Hopefully Bette comes to her senses.
To make things worse: Bette was recognized by the bad guy and became an easy target. What if they come to retalliate and attack Tina and Augustine? Or Angelica?
Kins, you have me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next part.
That was intense. I pray that the poachers won’t attack the people at the orphanage even though I have a feeling that is whats gonna happen.
And I don’t know if Bette is that oblivious that Nyah is definitely going after her after those comments.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.
I just stumbled upon this amazing story a few days ago. What a gift! I love your writing. I litterally can not get enough of it. You weave such a compelling tale I feel like am right there with them….
I think Bette’s fascination with Nyah has to do with the fact that in a parallel universe she could have been just like her…. I just don’t see this version of Bette being unfaithful to Tina in any way shape or form. She’s just being her clueless dorky self at the moment lol…. And Tina needs to speak up for herself and stop being such a doormat…. Such GREAT use of history Kins…
I literally can’t wait for more…
PS: More baby Angelica please
Bette is being supremely naive. It’d be a shame if a lion ate Nyah.
Nyah is a snake! Lying in wake for her prey. Bette has gotten loss in the her passion not knowing that passion comes from her love of Tina and Angelica!nHopefully she will realize that before too late. Thank you for bringing this challenging story to the site. So good!
