    Chapter 4

“If you want to keep your home warm,” Augustine continued, voice quiet but firm, “don’t wait for the cold to settle in.”

Tina met her gaze, her throat tight. Augustine had always spoken in enigmas and riddles, never forcing an opinion, only offering a door to understanding.

She glanced back toward the window, but Bette and Nyah were gone now, their voices lost in the hum of the lodge finishing to wake up for the day.

Tina sighed, pressing Angelica closer. Don’t wait for the cold to settle in.

She wasn’t sure if it already had.

As the truck rumbled over the dirt road, Bette kept her gaze fixed on the horizon, but her mind was back at the lodge. Back in the kitchen, where Tina was nursing Angelica, her face calm but her eyes saying everything she wouldn’t.

Bette sighed, adjusting in her seat as if that could shake off the guilt pressing against her ribs. The work was important, Tina understood that, but understanding didn’t mean she didn’t feel a distance growing between them. And Bette? She wasn’t sure how to fix it without giving up the part of herself that thrived out here.

Nyah, one hand resting lazily on the wheel, glanced at her with an easy smirk. “You always get this quiet when you leave home, or is this a special occasion?”

Bette huffed a soft laugh, shaking her head. “Just focused.”

Nyah made a thoughtful noise, drumming her fingers on the gearshift. “Mmm. Focused on the job or focused on the wife you left, perhaps, looking like she wanted to throw your coffee at you this morning?”

Bette shot her a look, but Nyah didn’t waver.

“She is tired,” Bette said eventually. “Just…I think she’s getting anxious about me being gone so much.”

Nyah nodded slowly, her voice even when she said, “Can’t blame her.”

Bette exhaled, rolling her shoulders. “No. I can’t.”

Nyah let the silence stretch between them, then spoke again, lighter this time. “She ever want to come with you? Or is this more your thing than hers?”

“She’s got Angelica. The lodge. The animals,” Bette said, but even to her own ears, it sounded like an excuse. Tina had always been 100% dedicated to what the foundation was all about.

    Comments

    1. Bette seems to take on a clichéd heteronormal role in their relationship. Get the wife pregnant and then return to your “calling”, follow “higher causes” and leave the wife and child at home to manage the farm? What did she expect from Tina when she married her? Bette is admirably steadfast and passionate in her fight against poachers. But that boarders on highly egoistic now that she has a family of her own. Hopefully Tina finds the strength to talk to Bette.

Hope B will recognize that she’s being manipulated by Nyla. By admiring and following Nyla Bette could lose her humanity. I don’t like that woman. No respect for other people and their relationships. I think Nyla is jaded by all the violence she witnessed and could easyly cross a line. Hopefully Bette comes to her senses.
To make things worse: Bette was recognized by the bad guy and became an easy target. What if they come to retalliate and attack Tina and Augustine? Or Angelica?

Kins, you have me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next part.

    2. That was intense. I pray that the poachers won’t attack the people at the orphanage even though I have a feeling that is whats gonna happen.
And I don’t know if Bette is that oblivious that Nyah is definitely going after her after those comments.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.

    3. I just stumbled upon this amazing story a few days ago. What a gift! I love your writing. I litterally can not get enough of it. You weave such a compelling tale I feel like am right there with them….
I think Bette’s fascination with Nyah has to do with the fact that in a parallel universe she could have been just like her…. I just don’t see this version of Bette being unfaithful to Tina in any way shape or form. She’s just being her clueless dorky self at the moment lol…. And Tina needs to speak up for herself and stop being such a doormat…. Such GREAT use of history Kins…
      I literally can’t wait for more…
      PS: More baby Angelica please

    4. Nyah is a snake! Lying in wake for her prey. Bette has gotten loss in the her passion not knowing that passion comes from her love of Tina and Angelica!nHopefully she will realize that before too late. Thank you for bringing this challenging story to the site. So good!
