    Chapter 6

The fourth poacher stood outside the gated compound, a lump in his throat threatening to choke the life out of him. The night air was thick, suffocating, but it did nothing to help him breathe or tame the panic tightening his chest. He swallowed hard, staring up at the house before him, large, imposing, and dark except for the glow of a few windows on the upper floor.

    Inside, Mr. Chang was waiting.

His fingers twitched at his sides as he forced himself to step forward. The gate had already been opened for him, which meant they knew he was coming. Except that it hadn’t been planned to be him tonight, reporting to the mansion, but his friend Joseph who was now in the custody of the Kenyan Wildlife Services.

Two guards flanked the entrance, watching him without a word as he climbed the short set of stairs to the heavy wooden door. His hand hesitated over the handle, but before he could knock, the door swung open.

A small, wiry man stood there, dressed in an immaculate silk shirt, his expression unreadable.

“Inside,” he said flatly, stepping aside.

The poacher’s legs felt stiff as he moved through the dimly lit hallway. The house smelled of rich wood, cigar smoke, and something faintly metallic, something that made his stomach churn.

Then he was led into a study, where Mr. Chang sat behind a large mahogany desk, sipping from a delicate china cup. The room was luxurious but overpowering, the air heavy with incense and oriental tea.

    Chang barely looked up.

”You’re not who I was expecting,” he said, his voice smooth, almost pleasant.

The poacher’s throat was dry. His fingers twitched at his sides. ”There was… a problem.”

Chang finally lifted his gaze, his dark eyes like polished stones, cold, unreadable.

”A problem?” he repeated, setting his cup down with an unnervingly gentle clink.

The poacher forced himself to swallow. His voice came out hoarse, barely above a whisper.

”The others, Joseph… they were caught. The rangers…. They came out of nowhere. Took everything.”

A silence stretched through the room, thick as oil.

    Chang didn’t speak. Didn’t blink.

He simply leaned back, lacing his fingers together, his expression impossible to read.

The poacher’s pulse pounded in his ears. He knew what happened to men who failed Mr. Chang. He had seen it.

    1. Uhoh. The distance is palpable. At least Bette is aware of it. Hopefully it won’t need something really bad and traumatic for T & B to find their way back to each other.
And Elijah on the brink of finally falling down the dark side. :-(
Another very well written story, Kins. Looking forward to the next chapter.
