Chapter 6
A bead of sweat rolled down his temple.
Chang exhaled softly, almost a sigh. Then, with eerie calm, he asked:
”And tell me… how exactly do you plan to make this right?”
The poacher’s tongue felt heavy in his mouth, like it was trying to choke him rather than form words. He wiped his palms against his pants, but they were already damp with sweat.
“I- I know who it was”, he stuttered unconvincingly trying to clear his throat of the lump firmly wedged there.
Chang didn’t react, his fingers still steepled together, watching. Waiting.
The poacher forced himself to continue. ”Rangers. It was a… an ambush. They were ready for us.” His breath hitched as he dared to add, ”It was the woman. The vet. The one called Bette. And the South African woman… the captain. Nyah.”
Chang’s lips twitched whether in irritation or amusement, the poacher couldn’t tell.
”Ah,” Chang murmured, leaning back. ”The American.”
He reached for his teacup again, taking a slow, deliberate sip.
”And Captain Nyah,” he added, rolling the name over his tongue like he was considering its weight.
The poacher nodded hastily. ”Yes, sir. She leads the anti-poaching unit. She was the one who… who led the charge. But the vet…” He hesitated, glancing up cautiously. ”She fights like a soldier.”
Chang made a thoughtful sound. He set his tea down carefully, turning his full attention on the trembling man in front of him.
”Tell me exactly what happened,” he said. ”Every detail. Where they were. How they moved. How they found you.”
The poacher swallowed hard, his throat dry as dust. ”We were camped near a clearing, waiting for your man to be collected with the cargo. Just like always.” His voice wavered, the memory still fresh, still raw. ”Then… something felt wrong. We heard nothing, saw nothing. But suddenly….” His hands shook slightly as he gestured, ”they were just there.”
Chang’s expression darkened.
”They moved quietly, ” the poacher continued, his voice a hushed whisper, like he was still in that moment, hiding in the tall grass. ”No trucks, no engines. They crawled through along the ground, used the shadows. They were on us before we could react. We barely got our rifles up before they had us on the ground.”

Uhoh. The distance is palpable. At least Bette is aware of it. Hopefully it won’t need something really bad and traumatic for T & B to find their way back to each other.
And Elijah on the brink of finally falling down the dark side. :-(
Another very well written story, Kins. Looking forward to the next chapter.
