    Chapter 6

He licked his lips, lowering his voice even more. ”It was brutal. Fast. The captain, she fought like a lion, took down two herself.”

”And the vet?” Chang asked, his voice still calm, but there was an edge to it now.

The poacher exhaled sharply, shaking his head. ”She…she almost got cut down. Joseph got close. A machete. But she…she was fast. Moved like she’s seen real combat.” He hesitated, then added, ”She was reckless, though. I saw her get hurt. The way she was holding her arm when they hauled the others away.”

Chang remained still for a long moment. Then, slowly, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished wood of his desk.

    ”You say they took everything?”

The poacher nodded quickly. ”Yes. We had a rhino horn, pelts, some bushmeat and 4 tusks.”

    ”And the others?”

His stomach twisted. ”In custody, sir.”

Chang exhaled through his nose, a long, measured breath. He drummed his fingers against the desk once. Twice. Then, without looking up, he asked.

“And you were the only one who got away,” Chang said at last, his voice quiet but firm. “Why?”

The poacher swallowed hard, his shoulders hunched. “I stepped away for a moment,” he admitted. “I.. I went to relieve myself. That’s the only reason.”

Chang leaned back into his chair, gripping the armrest in quiet anger. “So, while your companions were being taken, you were conveniently elsewhere.”

The poacher lowered his gaze. “I didn’t know. If I had…”

“If you had,” Chang interrupted, “perhaps you would have fought. Perhaps you would have died with some use.” His tone remained calm, but there was a quiet disappointment woven into it. “And now you stand before me, with nothing. No tusks. No horns. No compensation for my investment.”

    The poacher’s blood ran cold.

Chang huffed at the pitiful sight in front of him.

    “You’re all the same.”

With a slow, deliberate gesture of Chang’s hand, a heavy door behind the poacher creaked open, and soft footsteps followed, drumming a slow, steady rhythm against the polished floor.

Elijah had stepped into the room.

He was young, younger than most of the men in Chang’s employ, and it showed in the tightness of his jaw, the tension in his shoulders. He’d done things, things that had chipped away at his conscience but this… this was different.

    1. Uhoh. The distance is palpable. At least Bette is aware of it. Hopefully it won’t need something really bad and traumatic for T & B to find their way back to each other.
And Elijah on the brink of finally falling down the dark side. :-(
Another very well written story, Kins. Looking forward to the next chapter.
