    Chapter 6

But this… this was a man.

A foolish man, a weak man, a coward, sure. But a man, nonetheless.

He wasn’t ready to have a human’s death on his hands.

Yet, he knew what refusing meant. Chang would see it as weakness. And weakness was not tolerated.

Elijah forced his expression into something blank, unreadable. His mind worked fast, faster than it ever had before. The knife was already in his grip, he couldn’t put it down now. But he could change how this ended.

He turned to Chang and gave a slow nod, feigning the resolve he didn’t feel. “I’ll do it.”

Chang watched him, unreadable, then leaned forward as if to take one last look at the man prostrate on his expensive rug. “Good.” He said satisfied and then gestured lazily. “Take him out. Make sure no one finds him.”

Elijah exhaled quietly and jerked his head toward the door. “Move.”

The poacher scrambled to his feet, still shaking, but obedient. His breath hitched when Elijah gripped his arm, not roughly, but firm enough to remind him of the stakes.

The moment Elijah and the poacher stepped outside, the night wrapped around them, bursting with the pulse of the city. The streets were alive, chaotic—a mess of honking cars, shouting vendors, and the scent of grilled meat mixed with diesel fumes. Neon lights flickered above narrow alleys, casting distorted shadows against the cracked pavement.

Elijah kept his grip firm on the poacher’s arm, steering him through the crowd with purpose. The man stumbled, his breath ragged, his fear a living thing clinging to his skin. No one spared them a second glance; men dragging other men through the streets wasn’t so uncommon in these parts.

Ahead, parked beneath a broken streetlamp, sat the battered van. Its dented frame and rusted edges blended into the city’s filth, just another forgotten vehicle lost in the maze of backstreets. Elijah yanked open the back doors, revealing an empty cargo space littered with oil-stained rags and a coil of thick rope.

The poacher started to resist, feet scraping against the pavement. “Please,” he gasped. “I… I can work for him. I can make it up.”

Elijah didn’t respond. His expression remained unreadable as he grabbed the man by the collar and shoved him inside. The poacher landed hard, his breath knocked from his lungs. Before he could scramble up, Elijah looped the rope around his wrists, tying it tight enough that any struggle would only cut deeper into his skin.

The poacher whimpered. “Where are you taking me?”

Elijah slammed the doors shut, sealing them both in darkness. He climbed into the driver’s seat, gripping the wheel with fingers that had never felt so uncertain.

    The engine growled to life.

He pulled into traffic, merging into the city’s endless motion, but his thoughts were already elsewhere, beyond the neon glow, beyond the streets, beyond the noise.

Out there, where the savannah waited. Where he would have to make a choice

    1. Uhoh. The distance is palpable. At least Bette is aware of it. Hopefully it won’t need something really bad and traumatic for T & B to find their way back to each other.
And Elijah on the brink of finally falling down the dark side. :-(
Another very well written story, Kins. Looking forward to the next chapter.
