Spencer awoke, finding herself in bed alone. As she peered out the window she could see the night sky as it was brightened with the beautiful stars. Only about three small, smoky clouds filled the air as one caressed the moon. She couldn’t remember how she managed to get in bed, or asleep for that matter.

She rose feeling that last little bit of sleep wash over her as she made her way to the door.

 “Ashley?” She called out over the banister one the stairway. She heard a shuffle of movement from the living room followed by the reassuring sight of Ashley looking up at her. She smiled.

“Hey sleepy head, sleep good?”  Ashley asked with a half-hearted smile across her face.

Spencer made her way down the stairs still wondering how she made it up them in the first place. “Yeah.” With that, her words drifted off for a bit as she walked to the couch and sat down curling her legs to her chest. “When did I fall asleep?” Spencer finally asked.

“Not long after your mom left. I had to guide you upstairs because you were only half-awake.” Spencer felt the couch give a little as Ashley sat down next to her. She picked up the magazine from the table and resumed reading it. They sat in silence for a while. Ashley was reading up on some celebrity gossip, and Spencer playing with the tassels from the pillow behind her. Ashley finally closed the magazine and set it back on the table. “You should really get some more sleep. You have school tomorrow.” She sounded a bit unhappy about something. It wasn’t noticeable what it was, though.

“Yeah, I’ll go to sleep in a bit.” Ashley nodded in response as she gazed down at the floor.  It was as if she was trying to burn the carpeted floor with her eyes.

“Is something wrong?” Spencer questioned the brunette next to her.

Ashley placed on a fake smile and turned to Spencer. “I’m alright. I promise.” Ashley felt like she could have died right there. She was always so good at lying but when it came to Spencer, she never wanted to. She hated lying to her. Every time she did it she watched the future of the blonde’s heart breaking through her eyes. Ashley swallowed hard as she became uncomfortable where she was. She shifted a bit before rising to head into another room.
