Must I Dream and Always See Your Face?

The pack felt heavier now that it was actually on her back. After taking one last, lingering look around her bedroom, she flipped the light switch off. Walking down the hall, she stopped outside her mother’s room, hesitating. Closing her eyes, Ashley pressed her forehead against the closed door. She could hear them inside, together, their soft noises blending, making her heart ache. Gently pressing her lips against cold wood, she kissed her mother goodbye. Comforting darkness surrounded her, hiding her from echoing silence. On tiptoes she reached for the fourth frame on the mantle. Releasing its clips, she carefully removed the memory, stuffing into in her back pocket.

    “Daddy!”

    “Baby, its okay…”

It was the screaming that woke her up, but it was slamming doors and gunning engines that had made her sprint downstairs, frantically searching each room. Shaking, Ashley sniffled, squeezing her teddy bear even tighter. Raife smiled at his little girl, bending to kiss her tear streaked face. Gently, he pulled her back, lightly tapping his finger right over her heart. “Daddy’s right here, okay? No matter what, I’ll always be in here.” He easily gathered his daughter in his arms, smiling as she nuzzled into him, her small arms clinging tightly around his neck. As they climbed, his soft voice surrounded her, singing. “Happy birthday to you. You live in a zoo. You smell like a monkey and you look like one too!”

    Daddy!”

Giggling with his daughter, Raife laid her down in her bed, pulling the covers up to her chin. “You’re my little monkey, baby.” Silently he watched her face fall becoming serious again. Unconsciously, her right hand reached up. Grabbing an auburn curl, she began idly twisting it, weaving it around her fingers. “Ash?” Waiting until she looked at him, he smiled, gently tugging her hand from her hair. “Goodbye sweetie.” Pausing in the darkened room’s doorway, he appeared to glow. As he pulled the door closed, Ashley pushed her thumb into her mouth, sucking softly. This was all her fault, she’d tried as hard as she could, but she’d missed one. If only she’d gotten all the candles.

Eyes smarting, Ashley pressed her mouth to her fist, coughing softly. Reverently folding the motorcycle’s cover, she carefully tucked it under her arm. More then a year’s worth of dust still swirled, falling lightly, staining flawless black fiberglass. Reluctantly turning her back on gleaming chrome, Ashley grabbed her jacket. Closing her eyes, she slid into her armor, letting the sharp smell of newly oiled leather surround her. Spencer. Grimacing, she zipped, stopping right below her chin. Her eyes fell on the bike’s emblem, bringing a slight smirk to her lips. Ninja. She felt like one tonight, disguised, even her tangled curls were hidden in black.

    7. hurray! what a great way to start my day, even though i’m still patiently waiting for your next installment of my favorite story. your images of paula walking in on spencer and ashley brought back some not so pleasant memories. for them to have fought for their love even for those few moments was so brave…you did a wonderful job of conveying the tragedy of young love; it burns so hot that it seems doomed to a short life. bravo.

    9. Ooh shit. That was incredible, and so unbelievably sad. I find it hard to believe that a person would give up a love like that, just because of a disapproving parent, but people do it every day, its really sad. Spencer is weak, I wonder what she will do when she finds out Ash is GONE gone. This fic has the makings to be really something. I think you are a spectacular writer. UPdate soon.
