Echoes in Darkness, Chapter 7: The bitterness inside

Shane traced the movements of the dancers by the soft
scuff of leather on brick tile, and closed her mind to the thoughts
that wanted to come. She was not in a position to know or judge or
think anything about it, one way or another. She had troubles of her
own. And they were fluttering to the surface from her own dark heart.
The doubts, the fears, the insecurities. All the what-if’s. What if I
can’t be all she wants? What if her family hates me? What if I open all
the way up and she can’t bear what she sees? What if she leaves? What
    if she stays?

The litany rocked in her skull, blinding her at first to the changing
landscape before and below her. Then she felt it. Hard. Thrumming in
her chest. A WHUMP that seemed almost as soundless as it was loud. Her
eyes anticipated a bright flare of lightning or fireworks or something,
anything. Such a sound could not be just its own thing. It must contain
something. Her mind told her this. But the sound alone echoed in the
darkness, rolling down the canyon drives, to richochet against hill and
house and highrise. Then it began.

The lights went out, house by house, street by street, neighborhood by
neighborhood. From the north and west, something possessed only of
sound and hot breath was snuffing out the world.

    “Guys!” she called
    out.

The two dancers in the dark were aware of nothing but their own
    bodies and each other.

“Guys!” she yelled louder. “I hate to interrupt
    but.”

Something in Shane’s voice, an edge she’d never heard before, made
Helena stop, look over. Shane’s face was ghostly pale; she chewed on
her lip, head swiveling between the overview and her two friends. “What
    is it? Are you.”

“We need to leave. We need to get everybody out of there and go.”

Consternation spread across Helena’s face. Tina looked at her, then to
Shane, back to Helena, confused and not a little annoyed at the
interruption. “Why? The last auction is about to start.”

“The last auction has already happened,” Shane advised, waved her hand out over the terrace wall.

Taking Tina by the hand, Helena joined Shane at the wall and saw the
lights going out. “I’m sure it’s nothing,” she said more hopefully than
dismissively. “Just one of those rolling blackouts.”

    1. I just read all of your chapters. I must admit the first chapter had me a little confused but it makes perfect sense now. I believe in B and T all the way but you make this so believable. I can’t wait to see what happened and what has caused this blackout. This is very unique and well written. I will hold out in the belief that you will keep our girls safe.

    2. Alright, I posted a comment on this hours ago but it dissappeared in cyberspace. LOL This whole story is so deliciously dark and foreboding. I LOVE the story and the vividly stark descriptions! You paint this picture so skillfully, never straying from the characters true personalities, often giving them more depth than the original series. I’m glad to read something not formulaic B&T. I’m eager to read how the girls hunker down, LOL. With this motley crew there’s bound to be many more explosions. Wickedly imaginative. Keep going!

    3. Wow, okay, I’m beyond intrigued here. I love this! as it’s been said, very dark, and very mysterious. And I like your Helena in this fic. I think she’s better for Tina, than Bette is here. I hope Shane’s fears settles a bit eventually. And YAY, go Shane and her sensible self in an unusual, potentially dangerous, and difficult situation like this! :D Good thing most of them were gathered there at the party, so they can look out for one another. And then Shane doesn’t have to worry about whether Carmen will be alright or not. Bette could not have chosen a worse time to get drunk hah, badness, slowing them down. Awesome fic! This really tickled my curiosity, so I can’t wait to read more!

    4. AGH! The loom of impending doom is making me shiver! You got me on the edge of my seat for real. Great chapter. I’m freakin out to see what’s happening next
