Echoes in Darkness, Chapter 7: The bitterness inside

Shane shook her head violently. “Huh-uh,” she answered breathlessly.
“Rolling blackouts don’t happen at night.” She pointed her finger into
the heart of the darkness just to the west. “And they don’t blackout
the hospitals.” She swiveled her head back and forth, measuring the
extent and speed at which the city was going dark. “And those aren’t
the neighborhoods in the blackout map.”

    “Sowhat are you saying?”

“I’m saying, whatever it is, it’s rolling this way. Fast. In a few more
minutes, this place is gonna go pitch black. And people are gonna start
    to freak.”

“I don’t” Helena shook her head, a baffled expression in her eyes.

Tina gripped her arm. “She’s right, Helena.”

“But, it’s just they’ll have the lights back on right away. Won’t they?”

Shane shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

“Well, I’m sure they have generators here. Such places.”

“Hospitals have generators, too, Helena. And they’re still dark.” Shane
swiveled her head and looked at Helena, eyes pale and shocky. “We gotta
    go.”

She grabbed Helena and Tina and shoved them in the direction of the
French doors. Helena shook off her grip and walked swiftly into the
banquet hall, straight to Carmen, whispered in her ear, and picked up
the microphone. Carmen cut the music. Momentarily silence filled the
    room.

“Can I have your attention, please,” Helena said in a remarkably calm
voice. “There seems to be an electrical event, a a blackout
    developing.”

Voices erupted. A common word was spoken. “Terrorists.” It was the
first thing that came to mind. The self-serving seeds of nightmare that
had been planted from the highest offices of government were bearing
fruit. Fear and shock were palpable. Hands reached for purses and bags,
chairs fell over, drinks spilled off tumbling tables and ran along the
floor, making the tile slick and treacherous.

“Please! Please!” Helena raised her voice. “I’m sure it’s nothing serious. But we’d do best to go outside and wait.”

“Wait for what?” someone yelled in a voice pitched an octave higher by fear.

“Wait for the lights to come back on,” Helena soothed, in the same
voice she used with the children when something unexpected happened and
    they became shrill with panic.

“I’m sure.” The loss of power cut the words in her throat. And people began to bolt for the doors.

    1. I just read all of your chapters. I must admit the first chapter had me a little confused but it makes perfect sense now. I believe in B and T all the way but you make this so believable. I can’t wait to see what happened and what has caused this blackout. This is very unique and well written. I will hold out in the belief that you will keep our girls safe.

    2. Alright, I posted a comment on this hours ago but it dissappeared in cyberspace. LOL This whole story is so deliciously dark and foreboding. I LOVE the story and the vividly stark descriptions! You paint this picture so skillfully, never straying from the characters true personalities, often giving them more depth than the original series. I’m glad to read something not formulaic B&T. I’m eager to read how the girls hunker down, LOL. With this motley crew there’s bound to be many more explosions. Wickedly imaginative. Keep going!

    3. Wow, okay, I’m beyond intrigued here. I love this! as it’s been said, very dark, and very mysterious. And I like your Helena in this fic. I think she’s better for Tina, than Bette is here. I hope Shane’s fears settles a bit eventually. And YAY, go Shane and her sensible self in an unusual, potentially dangerous, and difficult situation like this! :D Good thing most of them were gathered there at the party, so they can look out for one another. And then Shane doesn’t have to worry about whether Carmen will be alright or not. Bette could not have chosen a worse time to get drunk hah, badness, slowing them down. Awesome fic! This really tickled my curiosity, so I can’t wait to read more!

    4. AGH! The loom of impending doom is making me shiver! You got me on the edge of my seat for real. Great chapter. I’m freakin out to see what’s happening next
