Echoes in Darkness, Chapter 7: The bitterness inside
“Guys,” Shane spoke up again. “We need to get out of here.”
“Yeah? And go where?” Bette slurred.
“Come on, Bette,” Tina stepped toward her partner, holding out a hand
to pull her up off the floor. “I’ll drive you home. We can come back
for.”
“No!” Shane yelled. “No driving!”
Bette gave Shane a stupid-drunk glare. “And why not?” she demanded as she slapped Tina’s hand away and lurched to her feet.
“Because in a few minutes, these roads are going to be full of cars. A
bunch of very scared people, convinced that the terrorists are coming,
driving in the darkno streetlights, no traffic lights, nothing but an
urge to get wherever they think they’ll be safe as quickly as possible,
and god help you if you get in their way.”
“And that’s just the beginning,” Lara whispered. “Do you know how many
guns per capita this city has? Scared people shoot first and ask
questions later, if at all.”
“But the police” came a trademark hollow whisper from behind them. Jenny was clinging to Marina for dear life.
“The cops are gonna have their hands full dealing with looters,” Shane commented. No one disputed her.
“Ok, so we can’t drive,” Marina agreed. “Then how do we get home?”
“We don’t,” Helena spoke up quietly. “We get to my house. It’s the closest to where we are now.”
“Oh yeah, right! That’s just where I wanna.”
“Shut up, Bette,” Alice snapped. The practicality of Helena’s offer made the most sense.
“And I’ve got steel doors, shutters, a well-stocked pantry.”
“Sure, so we hunker downin YOUR houselike a bunch of scaredy cats. And wait to be rescued?”
“It beats getting shot,” Dana observed laconically.
“Ok, so we’re agreed. Yeh?” Helena looked around the small circle of friends and hostiles.
“Yeah,” Shane was the first to nod her agreement. “It’s the best plan we’ve got.”
“All right, troops,” Alice said loudly, “let’s find our purses and get going.”
“Um,” Lara said softly, “does anybody else have a flashlight. Or
flares. Something? I mean, this is a pretty big group to be walking out
there in the dark.”
“I do,” Dana volunteered, “in the Outback.”
“Me too,” Shane added. “My truck.”

Cool ! I love disaster/survialist type stories. And since you have Shane and Carmen together, it’s all good.
I just read all of your chapters. I must admit the first chapter had me a little confused but it makes perfect sense now. I believe in B and T all the way but you make this so believable. I can’t wait to see what happened and what has caused this blackout. This is very unique and well written. I will hold out in the belief that you will keep our girls safe.
Alright, I posted a comment on this hours ago but it dissappeared in cyberspace. LOL This whole story is so deliciously dark and foreboding. I LOVE the story and the vividly stark descriptions! You paint this picture so skillfully, never straying from the characters true personalities, often giving them more depth than the original series. I’m glad to read something not formulaic B&T. I’m eager to read how the girls hunker down, LOL. With this motley crew there’s bound to be many more explosions. Wickedly imaginative. Keep going!
Wow, okay, I’m beyond intrigued here. I love this! as it’s been said, very dark, and very mysterious. And I like your Helena in this fic. I think she’s better for Tina, than Bette is here. I hope Shane’s fears settles a bit eventually. And YAY, go Shane and her sensible self in an unusual, potentially dangerous, and difficult situation like this! :D Good thing most of them were gathered there at the party, so they can look out for one another. And then Shane doesn’t have to worry about whether Carmen will be alright or not. Bette could not have chosen a worse time to get drunk hah, badness, slowing them down. Awesome fic! This really tickled my curiosity, so I can’t wait to read more!
thanks shane!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tina your playin with the devil WTF are you doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AGH! The loom of impending doom is making me shiver! You got me on the edge of my seat for real. Great chapter. I’m freakin out to see what’s happening next
