    Chapter 23

Within a few minutes the pediatric oncologist arrived to talk with Bette regarding the status of her son’s health. It wasn’t good news at all as he had taken a turn for the worse. They went out into the hallway to talk as Tina stayed behind feeding the baby who had suddenly woken up.

The options were discussed and then he left her side to let her think over the options. As she stood there, she realized that she had to call the social worker in New York and let her know what had happened. After connecting and then explaining the situation to her and that she’d take full responsibility for Ozzie, the social worker gave Bette permission to get the first round of treatment in LA.

When she had recovered from her conversation with the social worker and had dried her eyes once again, she came back into the room, her eyes red from crying. Maxine came over to her, as did Kit. Tina was sitting on the loveseat again, still feeding the baby. Bette fell into her mother’s arms to be supported and comforted as she cried. The last thing she wanted was to lose her son to this deadly disease.

Once she finished this release, she went back over to her son’s bedside, sat down and held his little hand. She was quiet as she sat and thought about the doctor’s words to her, and then formulated what she wanted to share with the others. Realizing that Bette needed a moment, the others gave her a bit of space as they could see that she needed to be with her son; she sat and held his hand. About twenty minutes had passed and Ozzie was still asleep. Bette took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Then she began to share her thoughts with the others.

“I called the social worker in New York and explained the situation to her. She asked me if I still wanted to adopt Ozzie; the question floored me. I shared that he was my son in all ways and yes, I was going to proceed and adopt him. She then gave me permission to proceed with his treatment here. The Pediatric Oncologist, Dr. Wesley, shared with me that Ozzie’s condition has worsened.
