    When Hope Is Lost.

So, as concise and as clearly as she could explain the medical situation to the family, the nurse laid out what was going to happen over the next several weeks of Ozzie’s treatment plan. It would be a ten-day treatment of chemotherapy and then there would be a six-week waiting period to see if the treatment was effective in ridding his body of the leukemia cells.

He would be in semi-isolation in his own room and all of his visitors would be required to wear gowns and masks to protect him from further infection. His immune system would have to be killed off and then he would receive blood transfusions and platelets as often as required for his system to regain its strength in fighting viruses and bacterial infections.

At the six week mark, he would have a bone marrow extraction so they could assess to see if his white blood cell count was coming back up to normal range. He would probably also receive a feeding tube as he would most likely have sores develop in his mouth and would loose his appetite because of the chemotherapy. The nurse promised that she would do everything in her power to make sure Ozzie was as comfortable as possible.

She wanted Bette to bring in his favorite blanket and toy stuffed animals to be sterilized so that he could have them with him at all times. Bette closed her eyes and took in a deep breath and then let it out as the nurse paused in her explanation. “Are you okay, Ms. Porter?”

Bette slowly opened her eyes and smiled as best she could under the circumstances. “I’m trying to be okay but my heart is so heavy with sadness. This is my wife and Ozzie’s second mother, Tina Kennard-Porter. I wanted you to know that in case I’m not here for whatever the reason, you can tell her what needs to be shared, okay?”

“How do you do, Mrs. Kennard-Porter? It’s a pleasure to meet you both. My name is Julia Markham and I’ll be Ozzie’s primary care nurse. Everything will go through me so that his care will be consistent and that the information you receive will be as accurate and informational as possible. If you have any questions at anytime, I’m also at your disposal. Here’s my card with all my numbers.”
