    When Hope Is Lost.

He has leukemia and because of his present condition, he suggests that we do his treatment here in LA as they have very good treatment for this here at Children’s Hospital. He says it might compromise his condition if we try and fly home to New York. So… I don’t want to risk his life to take him home even though I know he wants that.

There is a hotel next the hospital that allows families to stay there at a reduced rate, so I could…” she was saying when Tina interrupted her.

“Baby, you’re going to stay at the house with me and Angelica when you need to rest. I won’t hear of you doing anything else.” Tina handed the sleeping baby over to Kit again and stood up and went over to her wife to hold her if necessary.

Bette looked up at her with tear-filled eyes. “I didn’t want to assume…”

“My love, we are family again and in this together, remember? I’m right here by your side with our daughter, to assist you in taking care of our precious son. We really are family again, okay?”

“Yes, of course… I’m sorry… I just feel so lost right now… I only know that I don’t want to risk his life and lose him. So, I guess I’ll tell the doctor that we’ll stay here in LA for his first round of chemo.”

“Thank you, Babe, as it will give me an opportunity to go through my things and sort out what I want to take to New York and what I can let go of. We also have to decide what we want to do with the house. But we can talk about all of that much later as we need to talk about what’s happening with Ozzie right now. So what did he say about Ozzie’s condition?” Tina asked her wife as she held her while sitting on the arm of the chair. She kissed Bette’s head tenderly.

Just as Bette was about to begin to share with Tina and the others what was happening with Ozzie, the head nurse from the children’s oncology unit came into the room and began to share with them what they wanted to do for Ozzie if Bette agreed to have him treated there. She shared with the nurse that it was for the best that he be treated there and not in New York.
