Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me
Jo playfully lobbed a rolled up paper napkin at her. “Of course. You seem to be careful and precise about everything you do. Even while mixing a Bloody Mary at 35000 feet above sea level. So – would you rehearse what you planned to say even if the call wasn’t a business-related one?”
“Like?”
“Like a call to someone you had a crush on.”
Becca tossed the paper napkin back. “Are you kidding? Of course! All the more so!”
“Yeah? Why?”
“Because I’d like to sound like the most interesting person on earth, silly.”
“How could anything you say not come across as the most interesting thing in the world?”
Becca blushed, noting the barely hidden flirty banter in Jo’s voice. “Stop it. Unlike you, I need to make an effort to make a good impression. I’m not the interesting one with the double degree from MIT, who’s good at everything. I mean, what can’t you do, Jo? Sing?”
Jo shrugged nonchalantly and finished up the rest of her sparkling water. “Actually …”
Becca tossed over another rolled up paper napkin. “Don’t tell me you sing, too.”
“I could melt your heart, Becs. Just give me a guitar, baby.”
“Shut up, stud.”
—————————
Becca carefully closed the door of the tiny restroom that was next to the door that led to the cockpit, slathering lotion on her hands, tipsy with something, not from the Bloody Mary, but this tingly sensation of being around Jo. While away from Jo’s intoxicating presence, Becca had been trying to think of something clever enough to wipe the confident grin from that handsome face. Had there ever been a female in Jo’s life who’d managed to do that? Becca had to wonder. She caught Jo staring at her, and she winked slowly at the stud.
Then a pale look swept over Jo’s face, and then, simultaneously, the blonde bent over limply, clutching desperately at her chest. As Becca leapt forward with a cry, Jo, slumped to one side, unresponsive.
Chaos descended in the forward cabin, as a flight attendant and a woman, who’d been napping in a seat behind Becca’s, elbowed Becca aside, talking loudly into Jo’s ear, “Miss? Miss? I’m Dr. Crawford. Can you tell me your name?”
They somehow laid Jo on the floor. Becca hovered over them, trying to talk over the chaos, “Jo, her name’s Jo.”

Skydancer,
You have strangled me with grief! My God! What a traumatic delivery you’ve written.
Triggering stuff. Keep going.
All the best luck,
Blackbird
Thanks,
Had to get it out of my head.
U, on the other hand, are awesome. I see you flex there, with Gentleman Jack. I mean, what can’t you do?
You do the best stuff here, Blackbird.
Hey Skydancer, Nice to be in touch again. What of yours should I read tonight or whenever you get this request? Presently, just so you’ll know how to guide me to the stories you think I’d enjoy, I’m in the headspace of being on the edge of a story about to birth. It’s a tale about Anne Lister’s watch and how she behaves with, or toward it. The watch has power. It came from someplace special and came especially to her. For all those reasons and more I’d like to know Anne Lister’s watch’s origin story,
My sincere thanks for your compliment on my Gentleman Jack series. I’ve been off writing many other types of things and have been away from even thinking about fanfiction until, as Anne Lister might say, “Good Lord.”
My “Good Lord” moment was when the characters hooked me during episode three of Gentleman Jack.
Okay, recommendations of what of yours I should read.
Be well, Skydancer. The moon is out tonight.
Blackbird
Skydancer, Wonderful narration. Vivid view into Becca’s pain. Eager for a glimpse into her and Jo’s magical train ride. Great beginning!
Thanks, took a while to get it together.
Yup, you guessed it. The train ride was and will be the piece de resistance of this whole thing, in my mind, that I found that I could not not write down.
Hope all is well!
Skydancer, you’ve written some wonderful stories over the years but, this is stellar. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for more. Thanks for posting,
