Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me

“Okay, Jo.  You’ll be all right.  Let me just check your vitals, ok?  Checking your heart rate … can you tell me how you felt earlier?”

“She’s recovering from cancer,” Becca added hurriedly.

Dr. Crawford continued to talk calmly to Jo, who was starting to come to.  The captain had joined the group huddled around Jo, in the meantime.  They instructed Becca to step further away, to make room for people hustling in and out of the group, bearing things like water and ice, and pillows.  She heard the doctor tell Jo calmly that she needed to give Jo something that would steady Jo’s faltering heart rate.

After a few more minutes, the doctor scribbled something on a piece of paper she’d asked for, showing it to the captain.  They looked at each other, and the captain mouthed something like, “Are you sure?”

    The doctor nodded quickly.

He hurriedly returned to the cockpit, and the others gingerly lifted Jo up from the floor.  Becca caught snatches of their conversation.  “We’ve called ahead to a hospital in Chicago, Jo….  We’ll keep you comfortable till then….  We’re just strapping you in now.”

The man who’d been sitting in the window seat next to Jo had been asked to transfer to the doctor’s seat, in the meantime.  The doctor took his seat, continuing to check on Jo, talking to her in calm, measured tones.  Jo was still deathly pale, and her face was covered in sweat.  Then Becca heard the captain announce that the flight was being diverted to Chicago because of a medical emergency.  Then they would continue with their flight to Seattle.

Flight attendants walked up and down the aisles to calm people down, and one handed a set of forms to the doctor, who nodded her understanding, and signaled that she would fill them out after they landed and handed Jo over to the ambulance crew that would be waiting.  This attendant told Becca repeatedly to take her seat, and strap in.  “We’re making a detour … are you getting off in Chicago with your friend, too?

Becca wanted to correct her, and tell her that she’d just met Jo, but found herself nodding her head.  “Yeah, of course. Can I ride to the hospital with her?  Which hospital?”

      • Thanks,

Had to get it out of my head.

U, on the other hand, are awesome. I see you flex there, with Gentleman Jack. I mean, what can’t you do?

You do the best stuff here, Blackbird.

        • Hey Skydancer, Nice to be in touch again. What of yours should I read tonight or whenever you get this request? Presently, just so you’ll know how to guide me to the stories you think I’d enjoy, I’m in the headspace of being on the edge of a story about to birth. It’s a tale about Anne Lister’s watch and how she behaves with, or toward it. The watch has power. It came from someplace special and came especially to her. For all those reasons and more I’d like to know Anne Lister’s watch’s origin story,

My sincere thanks for your compliment on my Gentleman Jack series. I’ve been off writing many other types of things and have been away from even thinking about fanfiction until, as Anne Lister might say, “Good Lord.”

My “Good Lord” moment was when the characters hooked me during episode three of Gentleman Jack.

Okay, recommendations of what of yours I should read.

Be well, Skydancer. The moon is out tonight.

          Blackbird

    1. Skydancer, Wonderful narration. Vivid view into Becca’s pain. Eager for a glimpse into her and Jo’s magical train ride. Great beginning!

      • Thanks, took a while to get it together.

Yup, you guessed it. The train ride was and will be the piece de resistance of this whole thing, in my mind, that I found that I could not not write down.

        Hope all is well!

    2. Skydancer, you’ve written some wonderful stories over the years but, this is stellar. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for more. Thanks for posting,
