Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me
Then she sauntered ahead of a slack-jawed Jo to step into the plane, smiling at the attendant who greeted her, “Welcome aboard, miss!”
Jo watched their fingers play with each other now, as they both lay on her hospital bed. “I gotta ask … are you flying out to Seattle, since the emergency’s over? You know I can’t fly, so, I won’t get to join you, and …. um…”
Becca swallowed drily. I wonder how she’ll take this. “Yeah, about that. Look, I talked to Adam while you were in the ER. And I told him that I would stick around; that I wanted to see you safely to Seattle. He said I didn’t even need to mention it – and that he’d be grateful if I did so. So, no. I’m not flying out.”
Jo didn’t bother to hide her relief with a long exhale in response, but stayed silent. Instead, she lifted Becca’s arm slightly at an angle, so that Becca would be forced to shift and lay on her side, to face Jo.
She gently lay Becca’s arm across her chest, all the while stroking her skin, slowly running her fingertips over every inch they could wander over.
The monitor started to beep a bit more rapidly. Becca’s breathing grew noticeably shallower, wanting more of Jo’s touch. Wanting more than this stroking.
Jo was still smiling broadly as she cleared her throat, in an effort to sound less raspy when she spoke. “So … there’s a train we can catch that’ll take us from Chicago to Seattle. Really scenic. We’ll pass through Glacier National Park even. And there are sleeper cabins in that train, so we can sleep comfortably as we make our way across to Seattle.”
Jo flitted a glance at wide-eyed Becca. “Can be quite romantic, from what I’ve heard. Ever been on a train like that?”
Becca’s eyes narrowed as she fixed a probing look at Jo. We’ll be sharing a sleeper cabin on a romantic train ride across some of the most scenic places in America? Are you kidding me?? “You ever been on a train like that with a girl?”
Jo shook her head slowly from side to side, returning Becca’s probing eyes with a steady, honest gaze. “Nope, never have. First time for me.”

Skydancer,
You have strangled me with grief! My God! What a traumatic delivery you’ve written.
Triggering stuff. Keep going.
All the best luck,
Blackbird
Thanks,
Had to get it out of my head.
U, on the other hand, are awesome. I see you flex there, with Gentleman Jack. I mean, what can’t you do?
You do the best stuff here, Blackbird.
Hey Skydancer, Nice to be in touch again. What of yours should I read tonight or whenever you get this request? Presently, just so you’ll know how to guide me to the stories you think I’d enjoy, I’m in the headspace of being on the edge of a story about to birth. It’s a tale about Anne Lister’s watch and how she behaves with, or toward it. The watch has power. It came from someplace special and came especially to her. For all those reasons and more I’d like to know Anne Lister’s watch’s origin story,
My sincere thanks for your compliment on my Gentleman Jack series. I’ve been off writing many other types of things and have been away from even thinking about fanfiction until, as Anne Lister might say, “Good Lord.”
My “Good Lord” moment was when the characters hooked me during episode three of Gentleman Jack.
Okay, recommendations of what of yours I should read.
Be well, Skydancer. The moon is out tonight.
Blackbird
Skydancer, Wonderful narration. Vivid view into Becca’s pain. Eager for a glimpse into her and Jo’s magical train ride. Great beginning!
Thanks, took a while to get it together.
Yup, you guessed it. The train ride was and will be the piece de resistance of this whole thing, in my mind, that I found that I could not not write down.
Hope all is well!
Skydancer, you’ve written some wonderful stories over the years but, this is stellar. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for more. Thanks for posting,
