Nobis Pacem Chapter 1
But I had to wonder about how Jules and Diane interpreted whatever it was Chris had shared with them.
“What did she ask?”
“She wanted to know what to look for that would tell anyone interested in you that you were ready.”
That sounds major. I bit my lower lip. Force of habit, I guess.
But I waited for the shoe to drop, the one that the Big Topic wore. They still hadn’t brought it up, as brave as they’d been about confronting me about the emergent status of Chris in my life.
So I said it out loud.
“When either of you were talking to Chris did you ask about how she felt about the age gap?”
Jules and Diane looked at each other and then looked at me. I couldn’t tell from their faces whether or not this had been discussed, the way everything else seemed to have been.
“If not her, are you going to ask me about how I feel about it?” I asked my friends.
If this wasn’t something I could discuss with them, then talking about it with others, or facing the world about it, was a non-starter. Especially the in-bred, judgmental world of New York. Or the New York of my parent’s friends, at least. Many of them were clearly hoping I would eventually want to pair off with one of their sons, or daughters (given that I was making it more and more clear to them that I just wasn’t into guys). I could almost hear the chin-wagging sessions in those circles if word got out I was spending this much time with Chris.
“We did talk about that with her, Aerin, among other things,” Jules said, with greater care than I’d ever heard her talk about any subject with me. “And only because I was up-front about my protectiveness over you. She acknowledged my role in your life as, and she’s the one who said it, a big sister. So she didn’t taken it against me that I’d started asking her questions about what she had in mind, spending time with you. She could have thrown me out on my ear, as anyone else may have, or just told me this was none of my business. But she was always open and willing to talk, Aerin, and she was the one who brought up the age gap thing, and just the other week actually.”

Bette and tina????
Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.
What a beautiful story! Your writing is such a treat to read as you evoke every emotion.
Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.
What an amazing story ! So glad I stumbled upon this treasure !
Sad and sweet -but you said it complete.
Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write
Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
