    A Different L: Episode 8 Part 3

The setting is not a base or a suite. It is not someone’s home or a fancy restaurant. Instead, the setting for this moment is Big Belly Burger in West Hollywood. It is a fast food alternative to cafes like the Planet which even its chief manager, Iris will indulge in periodically. There is no indulgence at this moment and there is certainly no yacht like that of the women formerly known as Task Force X.

They sit across from one another at a small table. Lyla can easily pick out which ones are SHIELD agents, but says nothing. It is enough to know that she is surrounded as Victoria sits across from her.

Victoria: So not only did you fail to deliver, you set the enemy combatants free.

Lyla: And unless they’ve committed a crime in the last twenty or so hours since their release, you have nothing to bring them in on. I told you there was an arrangement, an agreement when it comes to Task Force X. You’re the one who forced my hand. You’re the one who forced me to release them, because placing them in some kind of hole of your choosing would have caused more problems than even you can imagine and worse, it would have caused me to become a liar. I’m not about to break the oaths I made for anyone, including you or Secretary Hill.

Victoria: Then you need to understand something, Lyla. Those agreements, those arrangements and whatever your word is no longer carries any currency. As we speak, every ARGUS base known to Secretary Hill has been consolidated officially as SHIELD bases. Every warehouse, every detention center. Every agent and employee. With one exception.

Lyla: Victoria… what have you done?

Victoria: It’s a general principle, Miss Michaels. New broom sweeps clean. As of this moment you’re the one exception. However if you wish to work for SHIELD, I’m sure we can find room for you.

Lyla: Forget it. Not interested. I’m at Big Belly Burger and I have no appetite.

Lyla stands from the table and notices several of the ones she pegged immediately as agents subtly turn their eyes in her direction.

Lyla: You’re making a big mistake, Victoria. And you’ll never be woman enough to be the boss of me.

    Victoria: Then consider yourself fired.

Lyla: I’ll just consider myself free.

Victoria looks on, watching the now former Agent Michaels, codename “Harbinger” leave. ARGUS is no more. They have been assimilated into SHIELD and its two brightest stars, Amanda Waller and Lyla Michaels are gone.
