    “Ran Out”

Claire lets the frog go as Maddie helps her up out of the mud.

    Maddie
Talk about commitment. Lets rinse some of that off in the water.

    Claire
That was fun. Claire starts to use some of the pond water to get the heavy stuff off.

    Maddie
Here Maddie gives her the button down she was wearing to clean up. I was gonna wash it when I got home anyway.

    Claire
Thanks. Realizing she still had her phone in her pocket, she gasps and quickly checked to make sure it is dry. It is. Phew.

    Maddie
Oh yeah, should be careful with that.

    Claire
Hang on a second, I should call my mom.

    Maddie
    No Problem.

Claire steps to the side and calls her mom. Maddie sits down, looking at the pond.

    Claire
Hey mom…..I know, I know. I’m sorry I haven’t called yet….yes I know you were worried….I don’t want to talk about (looks at Maddie and turns away)…about Rose right now. Where am I? Um….

    Maddie
    Timothy Birch Park

    Claire
Timothy Birch Park. Do you know where that is? Good. Just been walking mom. No mom. Yes. Okay…understood mom. Yeah, I’ll be there….I love you too mom. Bye

    Maddie
Got to go I take it?

    Claire
    Yeah.

    Maddie
Cool, want me to wait with ya?

    Claire
    Sure. That would be nice.

They both walk to the parking lot and wait for Claire’s mom…leaning against Maddie’s car.

    Maddie
So that sounded like it was an interesting conversation.

    Claire
Yeah, sorry. She freaked out a bit.

    Maddie
I can imagine so. Not knowing where you were. Obviously upset.

    Claire
    Yeah

    Maddie
Sometimes you just need to get out and away from a situation to calm down. Distract yourself for a bit.

    Claire
Yeah, but it doesn’t make it go away.

    Maddie
No it doesn’t. But it can help to take a few steps back.
If you ever want to talk about it…the offer for a third party perspective is always open. Or for a frogging adventure to get out. Hands Claire her phone.

    Claire
Thanks. I might take you up on that. Puts her number in Maddie’s phone.

    Maddie
    Cool.

    Claire
    So, you are gay huh?

    Maddie
    Giggles
    Yeah, sorta.

    Claire
    Sorta?

    Maddie
Hey, I’m not telling you all my secrets without getting some back in return. Tell me something about you.

    Claire
    I’m gay too.

    Maddie
Really? No shit. Alright, good secret. So I’m only sorta gay cause I haven’t quite figured if I only girls. I mean, I like girls…a lot. But I have been going to this LGBTQ youth group and I found out there is a huge spectrum out there of identities. Not sure exactly where I fit yet.

    Claire
    Oh, that interesting. What group?

    Maddie
PFLAG Youth. They have a group for family & friends, but this is just for LGBTQ youth and their allies. More of a social group than a support group.

    Claire
I heard of that. I have gone to PFLAG with my mom. Its cool.

    Maddie
    That’s awesome.

    Claire’s mom pulls in.

    Claire
I got to go. But thanks for…thanks for hanging with me.

    Maddie
    No problem.
I hope your day gets better. Text me if you ever need another escape.

    Claire
    I will.

Maddie gets in her car. She looks up and sees Claire’s mom get out of the car both upset and relieved. She hugs Claire getting dirty from the mud still on here. Maddie laughs and drives away, honking on her way out.

    Claire’s Mom
    Who was that?

    Claire
    A new friend.

    Claire’s Mom
Want to get some tea or something on the way home?

    Claire
No tea. How about some ice cream.

    Claire’s Mom
    Sounds good, sweetie.

They get in the car, both dirty now, and drive off.

      • Sorry this is like 2 months late, but I have not been on here since I wrote that due to finishing grad school….6 days to go. But thank you. I haven’t written fanfiction before. Just a big fan of the show and I don’t think they get into claire’s character enough. Thanks for your feedback!
I don’t follow Caitlyn on twitter. What would her name be on there?

    1. I really like your story! I really hope you write more about Claire and Maddie’s friendship in the future! Maybe you can continue this story? Anyway you’re a really good writer and I really liked the interaction between Claire and Maddie.

      • Thank you! Claire is an awesome character and I think she has more to say then she has been able to. I think she needed a good role model to have a friendship with where there was no chance of romance. Sometimes thats just what you need. I hope to write more once grad school finishes this month. Thanks for reading! (PS, grad school is why I have not responded until now).

        • I totally agree! I really like Claire and sometimes I’m sad that they don’t give her more storyline. I think they could do so much more with her character! And I totally relate with having a good role model to have as a friendship and nothing more. Good luck on grad school! I totally understand, I’m also busy with school right now! Anyway I think you did a great job on this one!
