    Hi, my name is Spencer Carlin, and keeping secrets isn’t easy.

    “How soon?” she asked. If only she knew…

    “I don’t know. A couple weeks? I really can’t say.” Literally.

    “Christ…”

    “I’m really, really swamped at the office right now. I’m sorry, Michelle, but I can’t just up and leave whenever I feel like it. I wish I could, but I can’t,” I lied. Well, being swamped at the office was true. But that was only because I was trying to get as much done as possible before I left for L.A.

    “Then I guess you don’t care about her as much as I thought you did.” I heard the click, indicating she had hung up, before I had time to respond. Even though I knew what was really happening, it still got to me a little that she would say something like that. But at the same time, I didn’t want to call her back for fear that I would cave in and spill the secret. I shook it off, deciding it wasn’t worth the risk to call back. I would be seeing her soon enough.

     

    The week seemed to be going by in slow motion. Days at the office seemed endless, and I had trouble falling asleep due to the butterflies in my stomach. I had devised something of a plan, I guess. I was going to tell Ashley that I was sending my present to her, and to listen to Aiden to get it. He was going to blindfold her and drive her to the airport, where I would be waiting. It was simple enough, but still hopefully exciting. Ashley did seem pretty down the past few nights; I fought back the urge to tell her not to worry, that I’d be coming soon. Thursday night was probably the most difficult.

    “Hey Ashley.”

    “Hi Spence… you working?

    “Yeah, how’d you know?” I asked.

    “You sound stressed, I guess. I don’t know. I can tell.” I smiled.

    “Yup… I guess I have a lot going on right now. How’s your day going?”

    “Pretty good. I’m trying to get this c.d. edited before Monday.”

    “That’s your birthday, right?” I said, pretending I wasn’t hyperaware of the fact.

    “Yeah… ugh… don’t remind me.”

    “I never pegged you as the person who would start hating birthdays.”
