    Hi, my name is Spencer Carlin, and keeping secrets isn’t easy.

    “The more of them you have, the less you start to like them,” she joked. “And I’m so not looking forward to this one.”

    “Really?”

    “Really really.”

    “Maybe it won’t be as bad as you think it will.”

    “Doubt it,” she replied.

    “Well, um… I got you a present.”

    “Seriously?”

    “Yup.”

    “You didn’t have to, Spence,” she said. I could hear that her voice had gotten a little lighter, a bit happier.

    “I know, but I wanted to. You should be getting it tomorrow… I know your birthday isn’t until Monday, but I figured you might want it a bit earlier than that.”

    “Really? What is it?” she asked excitedly.

    “It’s a surprise. Aiden’s gonna call you tomorrow and take you to get it. Make sure you listen to whatever he says.”

    “Come on, tell me!”

    “Nope!” I insisted.

    “Please?”

    “Nuh uh.”

    “To get it… is it alive? Did you get me a puppy?!” she asked.

    “Maybe… maybe not.”

    “Ugh, you’re impossible!” she said. Just to throw her off, I added a line in there.

    “Call me when you get it, okay?”

    “Alright. God, Spence, you got me all worked up now.” Maybe my mind was in the wrong place, but that could mean so many different things; I guess she caught on. “I mean… excited. Like… for the gift.”

    “Yeah, I know.”

    “Even though I really just wish you were coming,” she added. Her voice dropped a bit. “I miss you so much, Spence.”

    “I miss you, too.”

    “Maybe it’s ridiculous, you know… because, like, we just started talking again. But… I don’t know. I can’t help it,” she said. I could hear her voice breaking and tears began to fill my eyes too. I wanted to tell her so, so badly. I hated hearing her like this.

    “Ash… it’s not ridiculous at all,” I told her softly. “I’m… I’m gonna come to L.A. I’ll take a couple days off work and I’ll come. Next week.”

    “You don’t have to do that.”

    “But I will.” A rather uncomfortable silence filled the conversation. It took all of my strength not to fold and tell her the truth.

    “Do you mean that?”

    “Yes. You make it sound like I don’t want to see you or something, Ash. And that’s not the case at all.”

    “I’m sorry. I’m just… kind of mixed up right now, I guess.”

    “You don’t have to apologize,” I assured her.

    “I should go. I’ll… call you tomorrow, or something.”

    Great. Now both Michelle and Ashley were extremely unhappy. Is this what I get for trying to surprise someone?
