Grow Old With Me – (Chapter: You Can Close Your Eyes)

    “No I’m fine. Really.”

“Alright,” I replied. I didn’t buy into it for a minute. Even though she wouldn’t tell me, I suspected it had something to do with the time of year and her absent family. Either that, or she remembered last year’s semi-disastrous Thanksgiving episode with my mother. Unfortunately, my mother would be joining us again tonight; I hadn’t spoken to her since the article came out and I was still nervous about how things would go. The doorbell rang, however, leaving me little time to further ponder what could be bugging Ashley.

“Come on… we should go downstairs,” she suggested, as we both rose from the bed. As we made our way down and I caught a glimpse of my mother, the first thing I noticed was how she seemed to have aged a lot since I last saw her. She looked older, paler, maybe even grayer. It hadn’t been that long, had it?

“Hi Spencer,” she said as she gave me a rather awkward hug. “Ashley.” I guess we were just going to ignore what had happened all those months ago on the phone. Fine with me, I guess.

“Hey Dr. Carlin,” Ash replied softly. Ben had joined us as well and after greeting him, we all sat down at the dinner table. Small talk was made throughout the meal, but it seemed as though everyone was acting weird. Ben kept looking at the clock on the wall, while my mother and father frequently exchanged secretive glances. There was obviously something going on, but I figured I would just have to wait until later to figure it out. We all helped clear the table to make room for dessert, which was usually preceded by a break.

“Darn… I forgot to pick up ice cream for the pies,” my dad declared.

    “We’ll go,” Ashley quickly suggested.

“Don’t worry about. We can have pie without ice cream, just this once,” he joked.

“No, it’s okay. Spencer and I will pick it up… it’ll only take a couple minutes.” I eyed her curiously for a moment. Either she was really horny or just crazy… both of which could apply to Ashley. My dad gave in and Ashley dragged me out the door, not allowing me time to say a word of protest until we got into the car.

    “Okay, what is going on?”

“We’re going to get some ice cream,” she stated as she pulled a cigarette out.

“You can’t smoke in my dad’s car!”

    “I’ll open the windows… he’ll never know.”

“Ashley, what is your deal? You’re acting ridiculous,” I began. “Can you just tell me what’s wrong?”

    “Nothing’s wrong,” she insisted.

    “You know you’re lying, Ashley.”

“I’m not, okay? Everything is fine.”

“I thought we were past this.”

“There’s nothing wrong, alright. Shit… just listen to me.” I gave up then, remaining silent as we got to the supermarket, silent as she ran in to get the ice cream, and silent as she smoked another cigarette on the way home. I was on the verge of tears by the time we got to my house but seeing as how we were going to be in front of my family, I pulled myself together.

    “We’re back!”

“Great, just bring it to the table,” my dad called out. We got in and as everyone thoroughly enjoyed the pleasures of Thanksgiving dessert, I felt sick to my stomach. What could possibly be wrong with Ashley? The idea plagued me throughout the course and soon enough, everyone was finished. Usually at this time, my mother and Ben would leave but they didn’t appear to be getting up just yet.

“Glen, come back over here please,” my mother said as Glen left the bathroom. He did as she asked and sat down. “So… I have some important news that… that I think I should… share with you. I… well… I have cancer.”
