“Where did you learn to cook?” Asked the always curious Paula. Paula wanted to keep Ashley off balance, but the girl was like a high-wire artist, she didn’t miss a step.
“Drew taught me,” said Ashley. Paula assumed that Drew was one of her many stepfathers, so she didn’t ask anything more. “Want me to set the table?”
“How about I do that, you seem to know what you are doing,” stated Paula, pushing the door open, only to find Spencer skittering away from it. Her daughter blushed furiously, shoving her hands in her pockets. “Eavesdropping?”
“I’m getting good at it. I didn’t want you giving Ash a hard time,” stammered Spencer.
“I can handle myself!” was the response from the kitchen, over the sizzling of the chicken. Paula laughed in spite of her anger.
“She’ll tell you, won’t she?”
“You’re getting along with Ashley now? First you ask her to leave me alone, and then you keep her around so you can spy on us?”
“How did you know…?” Paula asked. Pulling Spencer into the kitchen, Ashley once again singing, head swinging to the beat in her head. “Did you tell Spencer I asked you to stay away from her?”
“Nope,” said the dark eyed girl, turning to Paula, “she was upstairs when you came over.” Paula’s face dropped, and Spencer turned a darker shade of red now.
“Have you two been…?”
“Mom, that isn’t any of your business,” stated Spencer. “Just like it’s not my business if you and Ben are dating. Even though it ruins our family in the process.”
“Spence!” Ashley bellowed, “Don’t do this; you’re going to regret it.”
“I already do,” announced Spencer. Paula felt the smile on her lips and Spencer saw the stunned look on Ashley’s face, “Not about being with Ash, about you being my mother. You’re a sorry excuse…” Paula stammered, but before she could say a word, Ashley grabbed Spencer.
“Stop it! You don’t know good you got it, quit it. Right now or I’m leaving. I can handle myself, thanks,” added Ashley. “She cares, I wish my mom cared for me like that, you’ve got to give her time.”
“No amount of time will make me accept this… relationship,” stated Paula softly.
“That’s ok Mrs. C, I’m patient. You can’t deny that you like me, even if you think I’m the worst thing that’s ever happened in your family’s life.” Ashley moved to the stove, flipping the chicken. “You guys are exactly alike,” announced Ashley.
“We are not!” Both women almost yelled. Making Ashley snicker.
“You are. Now go set the table, both of you.” Paula moved, as did Spencer, causing them to bump into each other, Spencer threw Ashley a look and Ash simply smiled sweetly. Paula wasn’t going to know what hit her, but she didn’t know how close she was to accepting them as a couple. Time, Ashley thought to herself.

Have I told you how much I LOVE this story?!? Ashley freaking ROCKS…she is officially the coolest person on earth (ehhh don’t tell me she’s not real…you’ll burst my bubble LOL j/k). I love how Ashley is matching Paula at every move AND how she’s making Spencer realize (or at least working on making her realize) how she’s lucky that her mom at least cares enough to be angry/unsupportive. I know Paula is a bitch, but it does show she cares and with time I’m sure Ashley will win her over. I LOVE THIS STORY!!!!! And woooooo, keep the updates coming. :D
