20 Years
“They would probably say that I’m fiercely loyal. Extremely ambitious. A workaholic to a fault. And frustratingly impatient. Maybe even a little arrogant.”
The older woman smirked and subtly shook her head at the brunette’s declaration.
“Is this your way of scoring points?” The blonde laughed. “Because I’m not sure you’re succeeding.” She teased.
“They would also tell you that I’m very honest. I can only hope that doesn’t scare you off if I’m upfront about who I am and what my flaws are.”
The older woman raised her eyebrows, impressed with the level of rectitude the young woman seemed to display.
“I’ve been accused of being passive-aggressive on more than one occasion.” The blonde confessed.
“Then I’d say we’re perfect for each other.” The brunette smiled. “We seem to communicate well thus far.”
“You know I’ve never been with a woman before, right?”
“You know I’ve been with several women before, right?”
“Touché.”
“I know this is all new to you. And I don’t want to rush us into anything. Let’s just go with the flow, and if we flow together, then let’s see where the wave takes us.”
“Ladies, can I get you anything else?” The busy waiter finally approached their table to check on them.
“Yes, a water refill please.”
“You got it, I’ll be right back.” The waiter then took his leave.
“I can go with the flow.” The blonde finally replied.
“Does this mean there will be a second date?”
The blonde noticed the older woman looking over at them as if waiting to hear her response as well. Another nervous laugh filled the awkward silence and she averted eye contact and focused on the drink in front of her. She slowly nodded her head. “Yeah, there will definitely be a second date.”
The brunette smiled brightly before slipping off her chair. “I need to use the ladies room. I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.”
The older woman returned her attention back to her phone as nonchalantly as she could.
The blonde eyed the woman who was sitting just a few feet away. The woman could feel a penetrating stare and decided that it was probably time to make her exit since her bill had long been paid. She stood up from her table and inadvertently made eye contact with the young blonde.
“I’m sorry, we must seem lame and awkward to you.” The blonde apologized when she locked eyes with the smirking woman.
Bette held up her left hand emphasizing her ring finger.
“20 years this October. Great things start with those lame and awkward moments. Don’t be afraid to call her on her bullshit. I wish you two the best of luck.” And with that, she headed home to her partner and twelve-year-old daughter.

Mell ! I missed you…. We missed you…. Please come back… You have unfinished business.! Loved that little piece… Effortless style and ease with words.. Xx
Thanks for the warm welcome back, K. But if memory serves, I believe you also have some unfinished business around these parts. ;-) Just sayin’
What a pleasant surprise!
That was fantastic and i loved the twist at the end. I really thought that you wrote a scene about B&T’s first date.
Happy Summer for you too. Maybe you will surprise us with more little fluffy short stories.
Hey Bibi! Glad you enjoyed the little twist. And I’m happy you believed the young couple to be Bette and Tina because that was kind of the goal!
Hi Meloveslu
That was a wonderful story, very sweet; are you teasing us…? I thought as Bibi, and I agree with Kins, you should come back and write more of this type of stories and finish your unfinished business. Thank you so much for this one and hope to read you more often (new chapters or stories) soon.
Proteonomics
Hi Prote! Thanks for the gentle nudge. I’ll see what I can do ;-) Thanks for reading!
Nice to see a post, even though far to short, from you. Hope this means there will be more longer posts soon.
Thanks.
Thanks so much Sassy! Don’t want to make promises I can’t keep. Let’s just say you haven’t seen the last of me!
I’m still hopeful. A post this year!!??!!
Very cute and I loved the clever little twist. Well done. Hope you’ll have more soon.
Well hello there, stranger. I pride myself on being clever, among other things. Hopefully YOU will have more soon. Like Kins and me, you also have some unfinished business around here. ;-)
Hi, beautifully done. I loved the twist at the end. Hope to read more from you soon.
Aww, thanks a bunch OS1! Very happy you enjoyed that little twist.
Mel, so good to see you’re back. What a cute story! I can see Bette coming home, calling for Tina and starting to tell about her encounter at the bar. “You should have seen those two! Could have been us on our first date when we met for drinks all those years ago at that bar… do you remember?”. ; )
Enjoy the summer, too, and if the heat gets too much, look for a room with nice air conditioning, your computer and maybe you can relax by writing another chapter for this “little fluff”. :-)
Or you might decide to write a few words for “playing by heart”. I’ve just started to re-read it, got to ch 25 already.
Oh Kiwi, I’m so flattered that you spend your precious spare time re-reading my unworthy and unfinished story. I’m hoping to get back to it soon.
I considered writing Bette coming back home to Tina along the lines of them having had a disagreement earlier in the night which led to Bette’s solo dining experience, but I felt that it may have taken too much away from the big reveal at the end of the story. I think having Bette instruct the young blonde to call the other one on her shit is kind of her recognition of the need for Tina to put her in her place from time to time.
So glad to see you post a story even if it was short. I’ve missed your stories. Please post again
Thanks, hun, I’ve missed writing stories to post for you! Hope you are well!
