I rocked her in my arms as her tears wetted my shirt. And waited until the soft sobs subsided. And then I waited some more. Till her breathing became even again. I waited for her to say something, anything. But she didn’t. I just kept on holiding her until she fell asleep.

I watched her sleep and my mind drifted to another room, another time; It must have been months after we had gotten married, just after the harvest season. The vines had lost their grapes, and their leaves had turned golden. The medieval city of Saint Emilion, located at the crossroads of Bordeaux, Saintonge, and Périgord, had been bathing in a watery autumn sun. Still being in the stretched idyll of our honeymoon phase, we had spent our days tasting world-famous wines, discovering the hidden gems of the region, and making love.

One cloudy afternoon, after another one of those delicious, lazy lovemaking sessions, the lights had been off, and I had just watched her sleep. I had kept thinking that now that we were married, I had the opportunity to enjoy that moment over and over again. She had looked so peaceful, and it had reminded me of the responsibility I had to protect her, always.

I leaned against the wrought-iron railing, and let my fingers trail along the delicate vines that embroied the balcony, their leaves rustling softly in response. The rhythmic clinking of glasses and silverware from the cafe downstairs carried upwards. The sky above was a canvas of soft pastel hues, as the sun began its descent towards the horizon.

’It was delicious,’ Tina said, stepping out onto the balcony after having just put away the last of the dishes.

’Renee barely eats these days.’ A heavy sigh escaped me, laden with worry, as I pulled her closer. Resting my forehead against her stomach, I sought solace in her reassuring presence.

Tina’s fingers found their way into my hair, her touch relieving. ’I’m sorry,’ she offered. ’She’s sleeping now.’

I tugged at her shirt and looked up at her. ’It seems like all she does these days,’ I stated the obvious.

’I know baby.’ She whispered, if her eyes couldn’t take away my sadness, nothing would. ’I know.’ Her lips brushed tenderly against my forehead, a delicate cascade of kisses trailing down my cheek. ’I arranged when I go back to work after holiday, to work mostly from home, so I can be here with you.’

Well written story, i would like it if there were many more chapters.
      Maybe a sequel?

    2. Thank you so much for this story, even though I kept waiting for the other one to be finished, this was also a great solution. I felt like the original version was a bit more angsty than this one, but I’m not sure.
You write beautiful stories and I hope we can keep reading your work.
