    6 Months- chapter 14

She pulled the letter from its envelope and began to read the words that she herself had read not 20 minutes earlier.  There was disbelief at the table, just as there had been at her own kitchen table.

She read without pausing or looking up and knew that there would be no interruptions.  As she read the closing, she finally looked up while still holding the letter in her hand.

The expressions on her two friend’s faces were as she had expected.  There was once again utter silence at the table.  Shane had a tear rolling down her face and did not bother to wipe it away.  Dana just sat there with her hands in her lap, mouth agape.

For once, Alice did not try to lighten the mood with playful banter.  She knew that they were all hurt and felt that they had each contributed to Bette’s departure and that hurt terribly.  Each sat there thinking of how they could have been there for Bette, but instead had chosen Tina’s position with reckless abandon.  There had not been much in the way of neutrality, and that had been wrong.

All three were so engrossed in their own thoughts, that they did not see Tina walk in.  She was with Shannon and made a beeline for their table.  It did not take Tina long to see that something was happening with her friends.  The expressions on their faces showed that something terrible had happened and she immediately felt a huge pang hit her stomach.  Her pulse quickened and a horrible feeling washed over her entire body.

“Hey guys” Tina quietly said once they got to the table.  “What’s going on here?”

Alice quickly got to her feet and said, “You know Tina, nothin’.  I mean, let’s just talk about it later.”

Tina surveyed the table again and saw that neither Shane nor Dana would make eye contact with her.  She saw the letter in Alice’s hand and with a nod to it, asked her what it was.

Alice had forgotten that she was still holding onto Bette’s letter and so quickly folded it and tried to put it back in her purse.  Tina had seen the handwriting though and immediately recognized it to be Bette’s.

    2. As much as I agree with the other comments, I will try to patiently wait for Bette’s letter and Tina’s reaction because I want to read it all together in a full (long) chapter. All of our comments are a testament to your great writing! We are addicted to your fanfic :)
