    A Chance Encounter – chapter 27

Bette and Tina had been together for a little more than three years and they were still madly in love when their perfect world came crashing down with four little words…

«You have breast cancer», Dr Morris told Tina.

    A week earlier…

«Baby, are you coming to bed?», Bette asked Tina. She had a goofy grin on her face, the same one that appeared when Tina told her she was ready to have a baby. She had agreed to put her career on hold and carry it. Bette was on the top of the world… For the last three years, she had shared her life with her soul mate and now she would have the family she always wanted…

Bette frowned. She had heard the water being turned off five minutes ago, but there were still no signs of Tina and no noise was coming from the bathroom. «Sweetie, is everything OK?». When Tina didn’t reply, Bette threw the covers off and went into the bathroom. She found Tina leaning against the shower door, dripping wet, her arms folded around her. She was as white as a sheet. Bette rushed to her side.

«Baby, what is it ? Are you sick?»

When Tina looked up, Bette saw fear in her beautiful hazel eyes. «Bette, can you feel this?»

Bette knew this was a very serious matter since Tina had called her by her name, not using an endearing term like she usually did. The colour drained from her face and she sucked in a breath when Tina took her hand and placed it on her left breast. «Oh God no…», Bette thought as she felt the lump.

«Did you noticed anything last night?», Tina asked. Bette shook her head no, trying her very best not to look alarmed, for her wife’s sake. A wave of guilt washed over Bette like a tidal wave, chilling her blood. How could she have not noticed that when she was making love to Tina ? Had the lump been there for a while ? It couldn’t have grown over night for Christ’s sake.

«Baby, let’s not panic… It may not be anything serious. I’ll call Debbie tomorrow morning and we’ll set up an appointment», Bette told Tina. Debbie Morris had been a friend of Bette for many years although they didn’t see each other very often. Bette took a towel and dried Tina who was now shivering. Bette didn’t know if it was from the cold or fear of what this lump might be. Bette put her arms around Tina’s shoulders and guided her to bed.
