    A Chance Encounter – chapter 27

«I’m not very hungry. I’ll only have coffee… Do you think I should call my mother?», Tina asked suddenly.

Bette pondered the question for a few seconds. «Why don’t you wait until we know more… It’ll probably turn out to be benign and you’ll worry her for nothing», Bette told her, trying to reassure her wife.

«Yeah, but what if…», Tina started, but Bette cut her off.

«Don’t say it OK ? DON’T YOU DARE SAY IT! We don’t know anything yet…»

«It’s OK to be scared, baby, I’m scared too… God, how I need you right now…», Tina told her as she fell into Bette’s arms, tears rolling down her cheeks.

    «I’m sorry I yelled at you… I love you so much T»

    «I love you too baby…»

When Bette and Tina arrived at the clinic, they didn’t have to wait very long before they were asked to step into Dr Morris’ office. «Hello Bette», the doctor said as she stood up to greet her friend. She kissed and hugged her.

    «Hi Debbie, you remember Tina?»

Dr Morris smiled and extended her hand. «Of course I do. Please sit down…», she asked.

As soon as they took a seat, Bette reached for Tina’s hand and gave it a loving squeeze.

«Tina, Bette told me you found a lump in your breast last night»

«Yeah, I was taking a shower and decided to do a breast exam. I had read something about this last week and since I have an history of breast cancer in my family, I thought it would be a good idea to do so…», she explained as the doctor took some notes.

«Who had breast cancer in your family ?»

    «My grand-mother. She died when I was 12»

«Have you noticed any change in you lately, loss off appetite, fatigue ?»

    «No, nothing…»

Dr Morris asked a few more questions before inviting Tina to follow her for a physical exam. «Is it OK if Bette stays ?», Tina asked.

«If you want to, of course»

Dr Morris asked Tina to remove her blouse and bra and she did a breast exam. Bette tried to read her friend’s expression as she went on with her exam, but she wasn’t able to tell if it was serious or not. Finally, Tina put her clothes back on and sat down.

«I’ll write you a note so radiology can schedule you for a mammogram. When I get the results, I’ll call you and we can meet again», Dr Morris said.

«Can you tell us anything at all at this time?», Bette asked.

Dr Morris shook her head. «I would only be speculating and I don’t like doing that with my patients. Finding a lump in your breast doesn’t mean it’s cancer, it could be a lot of things. We should get the results within a week», she told them giving the note to Tina.

«Thank you Dr Morris», Tina said as she stood up.

«Yeah, thank you Debbie for seeing us so soon»

The doctor smiled. «I’ll see you soon»
