    A Chance Encounter – chapter 27

Bette pulled her into her arms and held her tight. She stroked her hair and told Tina how much she loved her.

«My grand-mother died of breast cancer when I was 12», Tina said, clinging to her wife.

Bette fought her tears. «That was a long time ago baby… Medicine has improved a lot and there are plenty of survivors out there. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Debbie will probably tell you it’s nothing…»

«What if it is cancer ?», Tina sounded so scared that it shook Bette to the core. She had always been there to protect her wife, but this time there was nothing she could do but give her love and courage. Bette felt utterly helpless and she hated it with all her being.

«Then we’ll face it together baby… I’ll be by your side every second, every minute and I’ll be strong for you.»

«Can you hold me for a while?», Tina asked.

    «Of course baby… I’m not going anywhere»

Bette held Tina for most of the night and wouldn’t let go even when an exhausted Tina finally fell asleep around two. She refused to think that her wife could be sick. This can not happen, she thought as her eyes filled up with tears. The woman she was holding meant the world to her and she knew she wouldn’t be able to go on if… «Stop that», she urged herself. «You have to be strong for T»

It was dawn when Tina stirred and woke up. She looked up at Bette. «Have I been in your arms the whole night?»

Bette gave her a loving gaze. «Yes you have… Did you sleep well ?»

«As well as could be expected… I have a feeling you haven’t closed your eyes. I’m sorry I kept you awake», Tina apologized.

«You don’t have to be sorry, baby, I wanted to be here for you. Holding you is my favourite pass time you know…», Bette told her, hoping she could make Tina smile. But her beautiful face remained serious and sad. «I’m so thankful to have you baby… I don’t think I could go through this scary time alone»

Bette kissed her head. «I think I’ll call Debbie’s office now. I know she likes to get an early start». Bette picked up the phone and dialled her friend’s number. «L.A. clinic, how may I help you ?»
