    A Night in the D — Chapter 22

“You did,” Bette said, sighing. She fanned herself. “God, that was hot.”

    “You’re hot.”

“No, we’re hot,” Bette corrected her.

“Right, we are.” Tina laughed bitterly, putting the drink back down on the table, wanting desperately to keep something between her and Bette. “I am so not in my real life at this moment. And that’s what you’re thinking too right? I’m fucking the desk clerk, what the hell?”

Bette’s eyes dimmed at Tina’s tone. “People aren’t jobs, Tina.”

    “Aren’t they? What are you?”

“What do I do for a living?”

    “Yeah.”

    “I own an art gallery.”

Tina reached for the drink again. “Oh god”

“What?” Bette watched the anxiety enter Tina’s body.

“You’re thinking you’re too good for me.” Tina was sure of it. She recalled the panic she’d felt in the room and suddenly knew what it was all about. “Oh my god, what a fucking nightmare.”

She put her elbow on the table and leaned into her hand, her fingers gripping her hair, squeezing it. She closed her eyes and felt the vodka hitting her fast. No food, very little sleep. Suddenly she felt Bette’s hand cover her own, as it seemed wont to do.

“Hey,” Bette said. “Stop. You’re way off base.”

“Am I?” Tina looked up and through Bette and saw that she was anything but off. Bette flinched.

    “It wasn’t like that.”

“I know people aren’t jobs, Bette. But do you? Really?” Tina felt tears coming on and refused them.

“Of course I do,” Bette hissed. The hand that had fallen away returned, touching Tina’s cheek softly. “C’mon, please.”

Tina shrugged it off, sitting back and bringing the drink with her. “Breathe, Tina,” she said, more to herself than to Bette, whose look of concern deepened. Tina noted it. “Please what? Am I embarrassing you again?”

“No,” Bette said, her voice gentle. “You’re getting ahead of yourself.”

“I’m trying to stay ahead of you.”

“Well stop.” Bette reached across the table again, but Tina remained steadfast in her indifference, looking casually down at the offered hand.

    “This is a straight bar.”

    “I don’t care.”

    “I do.”

“No you don’t.” Bette smiled. “I want to touch you.”

“You can’t.” The words snapped loudly in the air.

“Tina,” Bette said, persisting in the gentle tone, “I can note differences in our life situations without unfairly tarring you.”

“But you don’t know my life. You presumed.” Despite the anger, Tina’s eyes registered hurt.

    “You’re right, I don’t. I’m sorry I presumed. I was an asshole.”

    “Right.”

“Right. I was. Maybe I am. But I don’t want to be. I’m just as taken with you as you are with me.”

“I doubt it.” Tina’s voice was sharp, anger replacing hurt. Again.

“Tina, please.” The earnest tone drew Tina’s eyes upward, to stare into Bette’s, which she noted were a deep dark brown. Soulful. And pleading. Like her voice. “Stop mistrusting me for a second, ok? We can’t get anywhere if you don’t stop. Please. Just for a second.”

Tina was still staring into those eyes. She saw the sincerity, the honesty, the vulnerability. She put the drink down on the table. “I have to go to the bathroom.”

    Bette sighed in frustration. “Ok.”

Only when she began to withdraw her hand did Tina reach for it. Tightly.

    “Come with me.”

    1. Hey hey! I had thought maybe you chose to quit this story. Sorry about all the crap that’s happened the past few weeks. :( When you sent Tina to the bathroom I thought she might run away through the window or stay for a couple of chapters to sit and think.

    2. It’s a very good point. You must find someone have something threatening first, then you could feel threatened. Is that what they say ‘love your enemy’? I’m so happy to see your new update. I hope you’re doing well now.

    3. Sorry about all the fun-squelching turmoil you’ve had to trudge your way through to get back here…I’ve really missed this story. The excellence of your writing is still blowing me away. Please keep the winds howling!

    9. All of this tension is getting to them. All of their preconceived notions of one another is driving them second guess themselves and their feelings. Let’s hope they can overcome this and finally get together. Thanks for posting, and sorry about all of the BS happening — it gets better.

    10. love it…and i missed this story…they sound like an old married couple a little, playing with each other even though they are serious…i thought bette would tell tina to come with hre to LA…is there a chance she will? glad you’re back
