Mrs. K. chuckles sarcastically.
Mrs. K. – I guess shocking your parents skips a generation!
Tina – And aren’t you thankful for what she did?
Her mother is silent for a moment.
Mrs. K. – She didn’t do anything wrong.
Mr. K. – For her time, she did! She ran away to marry a man against her parents’ wishes.
His wife looks at him coldly.
Mrs. K. – My father was a good man, just not wealthy enough for my grandparents’ standards!
Tina – Bette is a wonderful woman, just not proper enough for your religious standards.
Mrs. K. – Do not compare her with my father!
The producer shakes her head.
Tina – I’m not going to argue with you about your religious beliefs, Mom. I just want you to know that I’m happy and in love with Bette. And I hope that she loves me as much because I intend to have her in my life for as long as she will have me.
Mrs. K. – I can’t talk about this any longer …
She stands up and leaves the room.
Tina looks at her father with sadness.

The Kennard’s kitchen, morning: Tina walks over to her mother who is washing a pan.
Tina – Mom, I’m leaving now.
Mrs. K. washes and dries her hands before hugging her daughter.
Mrs. K. – Bye, hon!
The producer kisses her mom.
Tina – Bye, Mom!
Mrs. K.’s voice cracks.
Mrs. K. – I’ll miss you, hon! And I’ll pray for you.
Her eyes well up with tears.
Tina – I’ll miss you too, Mom.
Mrs. K. – Have a nice trip!
Tina – Thanks!
Mrs. K. – Call me when you get there.
Tina – I will.
Mr. K. comes in the kitchen.
Mr. K. – Ready?
Tina – Yeah …
They leave.

Raleigh-Durham Airport, NC, morning: Tina is at the gate, saying goodbye to her father.
Tina – Thank you for your support, Dad. It means the world to me.
He pulls her into a hug.
Mr. K. – I want you to be happy, honey. (pause) Give your mother some time. She will come around.
Tina – You think?
Mr. K. – Yeah … Her love for you is going nowhere but here …
He points to her heart.
Mr. K. – She can’t live without her girl.
She smiles warmly.
Mr. K. – Say hi to Bette for me.
She grins.
Tina – I will, Dad! She likes you both.
Mr. K. – We also like her. Maybe your mother has forgotten, but she will remember it, eventually.
Tina – I hope so, Dad!
Mr. K. – Bye, honey! Have a good trip.
Tina – Thank you, Dad!
They kiss and she enters the gate.

LAX, afternoon: Bette is waiting at the gate when Tina leaves the airplane. They hug and kiss on the cheek.
Bette – Welcome back! I missed you.
Tina – I missed you too! How was your trip?
Bette – Good! Kit can’t wait to meet you!
They smile at each other.
Bette – And yours?
Tina – Better than I expected. At least nobody ended up in the hospital!
Bette raises her eyebrows.
Tina – My dad says hi.
The brunette smiles.
Bette – And your mom?
Tina – Well … we will see …

Considering that Tina is from North Carolina, her parent’s reaction is better than most. The religious beliefs of many of those in the south just have big time problems reconciling being gay to those beliefs. Such an announcement has brought severe breakups in many family relationships. Terrible thing when it happens….
Hopefully Tina’s mom will have a change of heart. Good Chapter….love Grandma. I think she is Tina’s best ally to get family acceptance for Bette.

I wasn’t surprid with Mrs K. reaction but if she really loves Tina, she would want the best for her daughter and the best is one Bette Porter. I am glad Mr. K is more supportive and i think he will try to let Mrs. K. see that it doesn’t matter who you love and Tina’s happiness is what matters.

Tina’s dad seems cool and understanding, i think her mom eventually also accept Tina’s choice.
But i think Melvin not will be so supportive.
Nice Chapter but brought back bad memories for me my talk didn’t end as well. I haven’t seen or spoken to my mom in 9 years. Oh well that’s life. Lol.. Sorry to hear that. I didn’t think that I would be writing your story but it is unfortunately the story of so many. Speaking as someone who has lost her mother, I hope that you can remind yours from time to time that you’re still her daughter. Times are changing … and people do change with time, sometimes. I wish that for you.
Not your fault for my memories because your right everyone has a story to tell about their coming out. Some good some bad. I am sorry your mom has past. Mine is 74 and she says she loves me but wont see or talk to me. Change is not coming and I have dealt with it and moved on. So I’m living my live for she has lived hers. I do feel sad for those who are much younger then I who are having these same troubles. But hopefully stories likes your, mine and others will help them. Thank you for your story because its needed.

I’m impressed with Tina. She kept very calm and level-headed while talking to her mom. She respects her mom’s view but still stands unwaveringly to her own convictions and her way of life.
Glad that she has dad who seems to be supportive. Oh and Grandma! I’m with Martha and Bibi: you gotta love Grandma! I would imagine that her reaction to Tina being with a woman would be something like: “If I was your age right now, I’d try this lesbian thing too.”
I said it before: great story.
I loved Tina’s grandmother. I think she will be Tibette’s greatest cheerleader. Tina is lucky to have her dad’s support. He will do his best to work on Tina’s mom who in time will come to accept Bette and Tina’s relationship. It is not looking promising with Melvin.
