Against All Odds – Chapter 16

Bette emerged from the forest and entered the clearing just before Jodi’s fortress. As she walked, she quickly bent down to pick up a small rock. She tossed it up in the air, caught it and repeated the process as she walked.

One of the patrolling guards on the high towers noticed a small figure approaching in the distance. The lizard-like man froze and leaned over the edge to try and get a better view. At the same time, the guards surrounding the outer fortress walls saw the same figure. They squinted to try and make out the figure walking toward them.

"Who’s it gonna be? Who’s it gonna be?"

Bette pursed her lips as she kept tossing the stone, sizing up her opponents. She glanced up, saw the lizard guard leaning over the edge and smiled.

As the stone fell back onto her palm, it became surrounded by a blue-ish flame. Bette threw the stone at the guard, her Oracle magic making it soar through the air faster than any arrow.

It hit the guard square in the head as it howled in pain and fell over the side. As it fell, its body disintegrated and all that hit the ground was its armor.

The guards on the outside looked down at the sizzling armor before looking up at Bette with fire in their eyes. They were a mix of Gooru and dark Breean, Bette readied herself.

    "Here we go"

Instantly, they cried out and charged forward as Bette held her ground. She glanced up and saw more lizard guards taking their places across the top of the castle walls, each armed with bows and arrows.

    Just a little . . bit . . closer

The archers pulled back on their bow strings just as Bette turned around and ran back toward the forest. The approaching army was fast on her feet and Bette suddenly felt a gust of wind against her back.

    "What the-"

Bette saw a flash of yellow with the corner of her eye and next thing she knew, her feet were kicked out from under her. She fell forward, planted her hands on the ground in front of her and caught herself. She pushed off the ground, front flipping in the air and landed back on her feet.
