Against All Odds – Chapter 16

She quickly unsheathed her two swords and turned around to prepare herself for a battle with a Lyrus. It circled around her, faster than the eye could see. The only thing Bette could lock onto was a yellow blur each time it passed her.

Before Bette could react, the Lyrus charged her from the front and gave her one clean punch to the stomach. She felt all her oxygen leave her as she swung wildly to gain some distance between her and the Lyrus.

She began panting as she looked around for her opponent.

Fuck, I don’t have time for this

The army in front of her was quickly approaching, the archers released their arrows into the air.

Bette took a deep breath and closed her eyes, channeling her Oracle abilities. Everything around her seemed to move slower as she opened her eyes and saw the once yellow blur become something she could actually focus on.

The Lyrus came into view, a yellow lizard-like demon and it was charging Bette with two daggers extended. The brunette immediately twisted her body out of the way, dodging the attack. As the Lyrus rushed passed her, Bette spun her body around and stabbed her opponent in the back. Her sword went straight through and came out the other side as she twisted the blade to ensure death before pulling it out.

She heard the whistling of the arrows soaring through the air behind her and turned around to see them coming her way. She knew she wouldn’t have time to run, dammit she was almost there.

From the corner of her eye, Bette saw the air begin to ripple. The ripple was closing in from both the left and right, connecting in the middle to make a large wall of protection. A force field, Kit.

The arrows hit the force field and were absorbed, doing nothing more than making extra ripples on her sister’s shield.

"Don’t just stand there! Move that ass, girl!"

Bette blinked at the sound of Kit’s voice and turned around to run just as the army broke through Kit’s force field. She finally reached the trees and heard the sound of bow strings being pulled back.
