    Amicus Curiae

"I’m sure Trevor can have it done by the end of the day," Bette said, glancing up from her phone screen. "He’ll email it and you can take it to work on Monday to have an impartial third party review it for you."
"There’s not really much I can say to keep you from writing this text, is there?"
    "Already sent," Bette replied.
"And you want me to have someone at my work review an agreement that outlines our impending co-habitation."
"Or someone else you’re comfortable with," Bette said. "You must know a few lawyers."
Tina shook her head. What had started out as a casual conversation took a turn for the formal with this detour towards contract negotiations.
"Can we enjoy the day now?" Bette asked. "Now that all our law talk is done?"
"I’m sure we’ll enjoy the day. You go shower first, I’m going to catch up on the news."
Tina nudged her out of the bed and then reached across to Bette’s nightstand for the remote control to the TV. Bette sat up and slipped on a tank top before making her way to the washroom.
Tina watched her depart and smiled at the realization she wasn’t at all averse to living with Bette. It felt good to have Bette trying to convince her, with both a practical and an emotional argument. Waking up to her every day was definitely something she could get used to.
    *********
"This is ridiculous Bette," Tina said as she flipped to the last page of the contract.
"Are you questioning the motives and professionalism of my business partner?" Bette asked.
"This doesn’t protect you in any way," Tina said. "It says we split all assets and liabilities 50/50 in the event of a dissolution. You get 50% of my debts and I get 50% of your house? How’s that fair?"
"We’re not going to split up. Take it or leave it."
    "Bette…"
"For real, this is the agreement," Bette said.
    "God you’re stubborn," Tina sighed.
"Thanks, I’ll tell Daddy you said so," Bette grinned. "Love you."
    "I love you too."
    "When are you moving in?"
"I have to give two months’ notice," Tina replied. "And we were talking part time…"
"When are you moving in?" Bette repeated.
"If I leave it to you, you’ll have a mover booked by next weekend. I’ll see what I can do," Tina replied. "Do you always get your way in such spectacular fashion?"
"Not always," Bette replied. "But when it’s important to me, I tend to make things happen."
"I noticed," Tina replied. "I hope that doesn’t become a point of contention between us."
"Soon we’ll be reciting vows in front of friends and family."
"The ink’s not dry on the contract you just printed off; can we breathe between leaps of faith, please?"
Bette acquiesced to Tina’s request to quell her enthusiasm. It didn’t make her less optimistic for their future together – she was just going to keep it a bit more to herself.
