    An Epistolary Affair (Complete work)

    An Epistolary Affair
    Letter 1
    Dear Sis,

It is hard to believe that nearly two years have gone by since you sold your house, put everything you owned in storage and hit the road in your desire to see the World.

I can hear you now berating me for making it sound like an endless vacation but believe me, big sis, I am fully aware that travel for you is a job, your profession and a very demanding one at that.

I suppose I shouldn’t pity you either because quite frankly how can staying in a pristine villa at the edge of the Caribbean sea, sand outside your door be seen as a hardship or even riding horses through the red rocky landscape of Arizona be all that bad? You see the world through your camera lens for the enjoyment of others and you get to experience the most wonderful sights on the planet.

You are a free agent entirely in control of your destiny, a rare and enviable way of life.

It is undeniable that the artistic streak is very prominent amongst our parent’s children.

I am glad that you have settled for a while though and I can pin you down for a few weeks to exchange a few written words with you.

So, France it is then, for a while at least! Paris, the City of lights. Your worldwide connection have even sorted you out with an apartment. I cannot wait for you to tell me all you can see from your windows, what every day for you is like in the most romantic city in the world. I am sure Paris is every bit as beautiful as people who have been there, say it is. Please do not spare any details when you write back!

I must say I envy you and your nomadic lifestyle. I have, at your suggestion, looked into coming over to see you but I will have to get back to you on that later on.

Apart from enquiring about you sis, my letter has an intended purpose. One which I do hope will not shock you.

Eric and I have broken up.

This may or may not come as a surprise to you. You did remain mystified for a long time after I told you the news that we had started dating. Can you believe that it was 3 years ago?

    1. I had not read this story when it was first posted. It was before I knew of the site. I feel blessed that it was brought to my attention.
Letter writing of all sorts is a special genre for me. It is easy to bare the soul in a letter, easy to fall in love through a letter, and the way you two have handled this process is incredible to say the least. You have tapped into something that I can’t describe.

But these lines: “I’m sorry for this outburst, especially as I finish this letter, but I feel like I can tell you anything. And I know it’s silly, but I already feel better for having confided in you. How is it that you, that I know through your words only, can make me feel calmer than anyone has ever been able to? Could it be that connection again? … Will we ever know?…” Oh wow…yep, been there…just incredible.

      Thank you.

    2. A beautiful story, beautifully written. The power of the spoken word so much more powerful and meaningful when put to paper in a letter. The words stay on the page and unlike the spoken word will never fade away only with age.
