Anatomy of a Breakdown Chap 7

“What is it you want to talk about?” Bette breaks the silence.

                “Well… I just wanted to say…. I’m sorry.”

“What do you have to be sorry for Tina? You didn’t… You have nothing to be sorry for.” Tina reaches out to entwine her fingers with Bette.

“It wasn’t just you Bette. I’m responsible for all of this as much as you are. After we lost the baby I just fell apart. I made you take responsibility for me and the baby and you. That was so much… I was just… I was so lost. It felt like I died right along with the baby. I didn’t reach out to you. I just made you feel like you had to lift me up. I didn’t even…” The tears begin to fall, her breathing becomes erratic as she replays their relationship in her mind. Bette raises her hand and places it gently on Tina’s cheek. Tina turns slightly to kiss Bette’s palm; how she had missed these hands.

“I pushed you away… I pushed you into someone else.”

                “Tina…”

“I did Bette. I should’ve thought about you and your grief. But it had been so long since I thought of myself. Since I did something for me. I just shut you out. I blamed you for his death.” The confession comes as a shock for both women.

“You what? You did/” Bette feels her cheeks begin to flush with anger.

“I…I blamed you. That’s why I pulled away. I needed someone to blame.” Tina says not proud of the words escaping her lips. She had never shared this with anyone.

“Why?” Bette asks unsure if she is ready to hear the answer. The silence grows once more. Bette strokes Tina’s hand with her thumb. “It’s okay. I need to know. No more secrets.” Bette’s voice soothes Tina who looks into the brunette’s eyes.

“I just thought that if you weren’t taking on Provocations and working so much we could have… It’s crazy I think my resentment about you working and me having to carry the baby and take care of my body…. I just felt like I was so alone and really having the baby on my own. I just thought we would…”

    1. glad they r talking… and ii agree… that night when tina left bette and melvin at dinner… bette should of got up and left too… great chapter… PPS

    2. Hey denEmat, I’m really enjoying your tale. Delayed honesty is soooo much harder than telling the truth in the moment….the delay gives us too much time to speculate and imagine all kinds of responses, outcomes and it even alters reality somewhat. And the results are often as immediately painfully as ultimately rewarding. Its good that our girls are getting honest with each other. Thanks for writing. PPS.

    3. What a way to end a beautiful party with friends and family. Poor Bette, falling asleep when all she wants to do is spend time with Tina. Maybe they should not stay in the same bed but darn it, I think that it is a great idea.
